Hi @Lillyf03

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry your Star Wars edition HP laptop is stuck on “Checking media” followed by “The selected boot device failed”—it’s deeply frustrating when a system that once ran beautifully now won’t even start. You’ve done everything right by trying to restart and observing the exact message.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help bring it back to life.

What this error means

The message indicates that your laptop is trying to boot from a device (usually the internal hard drive), but it either:

  • Can’t find a valid operating system
  • Can’t access the drive at all
  • Is mistakenly trying to boot from a network or USB device

This doesn’t mean the laptop is too old—it means the boot path needs to be corrected or the drive needs to be restored.

Step-by-step actions to recover your laptop

1. Check BIOS boot settings

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press Esc, then F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  3. Go to System Configuration > Boot Options.
  4. Confirm:
    • Boot Mode is set to UEFI
    • Secure Boot is Enabled
    • Internal hard drive is listed as a boot device

If the hard drive is missing, it may be disconnected or failed.

2. Run HP UEFI diagnostics

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press Esc, then F2.
  3. Select Component Tests > Storage > Quick Test.
  4. Run the test and note any error codes.

This checks whether the internal drive is functioning and accessible.

3. Reinstall Windows using USB

If the drive is detected but the OS is missing or corrupted:

What you’ll need:

  • A second Windows PC
  • A USB drive (at least 8 GB)

Steps:

  1. On another PC, visit:
    Windows 11 Installation Media
  2. Download the Media Creation Tool and create a bootable USB.
  3. Insert the USB into your laptop.
  4. Power on and press Esc, then F9 to open Boot Device Options.
  5. Select the USB drive and follow the prompts to install Windows.
  6. When asked where to install Windows, delete all partitions and install on Unallocated Space.

This gives your laptop a fresh start with a clean operating system.

Let me know what you find in BIOS and diagnostics. If the drive is missing or fails the test, we can explore replacing it and reinstalling Windows. You’ve done everything right by staying persistent—I’ll be here to guide you further if needed.
