@naetoja, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your notebook fails to boot after an interrupted update. Let's work through this step-by-step to try and resolve the issue.

Perform a Hard Reset

This helps clear any residual electrical charge and resets the hardware connections.

  1. Turn off the notebook completely.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  3. Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the battery and AC adapter.
  5. Try turning on the notebook.

If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Boot into Recovery Mode

Since the system is stuck in a boot loop, try accessing Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE):

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly (once every second) until the Choose an option screen appears.
  3. If you see this screen, select:
    • Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair

Windows will attempt to fix startup issues automatically.

Use System Restore (if Startup Repair Fails)

If Startup Repair doesn’t work:

  1. Go back to Advanced options.
  2. Select System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point before the update was installed.

Create a Windows 10 Recovery USB (if F11 doesn’t work)

If you can’t access recovery mode:

  1. Use another working PC to create a Windows 10 installation media:
    • Visit: Download Windows 10 Tool
    • Follow the instructions to create a bootable USB.
  2. Insert the USB into your HP notebook and boot from it (you may need to press Esc > F9 to select the boot device).
  3. Choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Startup Repair or System Restore.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hey @naetoja,

Thank you for your response

Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague @Max3Aj is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

I’m here to help, and together, we’ll work through this!

Please follow these troubleshooting steps:

Boot Into Safe Mode

If the system is continuously rebooting, trying to boot into Safe Mode might allow you to bypass some of the issues caused by the failed update.

Power on the PC and repeatedly press F8

Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu, choose Safe Mode.

If it boots into Safe Mode, try to uninstall the most recent updates by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates.

You can also try to roll back any device drivers that might have been affected.

Check for Hard Drive Errors (using Command Prompt in Recovery Mode)

It’s possible that some system files or the boot sector got corrupted. You can attempt to repair these by using CHKDSK.

Boot your PC into Windows Recovery Environment (same process as before: Turn on and press F11 repeatedly).

Once you're in Advanced options, select Command Prompt.

In the command prompt, type the following command: chkdsk /f C:

This will check for and attempt to fix any errors on your hard drive. If you have a different drive letter for your system partition, replace C: with that letter.

Use the Windows 10 Installation Media for a Repair

Since the normal recovery mode didn’t work, we can try using a Windows 10 bootable USB (which you can create using another PC) and perform a Repair Installation.

Create a bootable USB by downloading Windows 10 Media Creation Tool on another computer.

Insert the USB drive into your laptop and restart it. Press Esc > F9 to access the boot menu and select your USB.

When the Windows installation screen appears, click Repair your computer.

From there, you can try Startup Repair, or if that doesn’t work, go to Advanced options > Command Prompt and use the sfc /scannow command to fix corrupted system files.

Perform a System Reset (Factory Reset)

If the system is still unresponsive, you may need to consider a System Reset, which will reinstall Windows and reset everything back to factory settings. This will wipe your data, so make sure you back it up (if possible).

Access Advanced Startup Options by powering on and holding the Shift key.

Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

Choose Keep my files (if you want to try to preserve your data) or Remove everything (for a clean reset).

I truly hope these steps help get things back on track. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.

Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊

Problem solved? 🎉 That’s fantastic! If you could mark this as the Accepted Solution, it would help others find their way here faster. And if you found this helpful, a simple ‘yes’ would mean a lot – it makes my day and gives this reply a little street cred! 🏅

Hi Garp,

Thanks for your message, unfortunately it still didn't work, I have a feeling that the system is not recognizing the commands from the keyboard,I also tried with an external keyboard -

The system just tries to reboot ie it comes on and stays blank for approximately 120 seconds, makes a shut off noise and repeats the same process again and again, is it possible to send a short video recording of what the problem looks like?

Just to add, I noticed the problem when I forgot to plug in my laptop when it tried to install some updates a while ago

Thanks
