HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd1000 (917T7AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My camera was blocked (finally figured out the tap at the top of the screen)

I **bleep** (I belive it is ousourced to a 3rd party in a foreign country)?

This is what happened:

1. The person had me download Awery Remote to take control of cumputer

2. My rounter and comouter would not allow it to work due to phishing warning

3. I was told that my HP account was corrupted and that my computer was infested with viruses

4. He then produced a screen that showed a very breif scan and another showing viruses

5. He then said he had to close my HP account and start a new one and that involved a refund of $20 and a repurchase of $20 to start the process and then asked for my banking information

6. I ended the call at that point

7. I recontacted to HP support again and the new agent connected to my computer using HP connect and had no issues. She said HP support does not detect viruses and that would involve paid support

8. There was a case number from my 1st call, but no notes in the case - odd

9. I suspect the person I 1st called was a scam (I got the number off a HP ad on google (legit number for HP) and not the HPsupport website

10. I downloaded bit defender, removed the Aerway remote software, and ran both a malware and virus scan - no issues

Any thought or suggestions

Welcome to the HP English Community --

I am sorry that happened to you.

You were not talking to HP during that first call.

No matter what it looked like, no matter what you believe, HP does not do this.

No legitimate company does this.

Your computer was never full of bugs - it's a ploy that scammers use to scare their prey into compliance with the scheme to cheat the customer out of money and private information.

If you paid out funds to the scammer, Call your bank.

Request for Review – Please Read

A request has been submitted to our HP Community moderators for review and evaluation of your concern.

Worth Noting

  • Our HP Community is a peer-to-peer user group.
  • We are not HP Technical Support -- We are not associated with HP Sales, Service, or Warranty.
  • Our request for assistance on your behalf does not guarantee HP will respond nor does our request influence the outcome.
  • The time frame (how long it takes) to receive a response from HP is not controlled by the Community.

Important

  • HP does not free-post HP Support numbers on the Internet.  Not.  Not in secret, not in chat, not in pop-ups, and not so a nice technician can call you back, sneak into your computer, and then tell you your computer is full of bugs.

  • Be wary of any posted messages in the Community containing phone or email links – these are likely scammers who mean you harm.

  • Please do not post any personal information in the Community.  We are a public resource.

  • Be very careful when out on the Internet looking for help - one little dot, space, or letter out of place can land you in trouble.

Thanks:

1. The number I called was the correct number for HP support

2. A case number was opened and was real (there were no notes per the second agent I called).

3. Aren't the phone calls recorded?

Apologies - I don't have a different answer --

I do not work for HP -- I cannot speak for what transpired.

At this writing:

HP Support does not free-post HP Support phone numbers on the 'net.

The process:

Contact HP Support >  HP World-Wide Support

Submit an online case request for an In-Warranty product.

When (and if) the case is accepted, a contact number for your region is posted on your screen.

The whole process, of course, depends on you having contacted HP Support.

HP Support will not tell you your computer is full of bugs and then try to sell you software you do not need or want.

HP Support does not cast you off to third party vendors who want access to your computer, want to sell you software, or try to trick you into giving out personal information.

The scam sties are insidious, clever, well written, and dangerous.

No, I cannot explain what you did, what happened, or why it changed from one time to the next.

Yes, in so much that I am aware, HP creates transaction records of all open cases.

I would guess these records are also saved for later internal review by HP.

HP Support does not use Community "Tags" and does not promise help if you would just hand out a credit card number.

Online Case Submission to HP Support is available to those whose devices registered and are still in Warranty.

Some (Most) regions display phone / chat contact information only after the case is submitted online.

Not every issue is covered under the standard Hardware Warranty.  Purchased Care Pack Warranties differ by contract.

HP is not a "general" repair facility: Requests for out-of-warranty repairs are usually not accepted.

If the problem is hardware, if your device is in Warranty, if your device is Registered, and you cannot submit your case to Support, let us know and we will forward a request.
