HP Pavilion 595-p0084

This code has surfaced over several years of testing

Hi @Stub-01,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that your HP Pavilion 595-p0084 has been reporting a Long Drive Self Test failure with error code 305, and that this has appeared repeatedly over several years.

Because the Long DST (Drive Self-Test) is specifically a storage diagnostic, I would take this seriously as an indication that the hard drive/storage device may be having an issue. HP's diagnostics use the Long DST as part of the more extensive storage testing.

First, protect your data.

If Windows is currently working, I recommend backing up your important files before doing further testing. If the drive is beginning to fail, continued use can eventually make the data inaccessible.

Run the storage test again.

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F2.
  4. Select Component Tests > Storage.
  5. Run the Quick Test first.
  6. If it passes but the Long DST continues to fail, run the Extensive Test and specifically check the SMART Check, Short DST, Optimized DST, and Long DST results.
  7. Open test logs and note the complete result and any 24-digit failure ID.

If the drive fails again, please post the complete diagnostic result/Failure ID, rather than just error code 305. HP uses the 24-digit Failure ID to identify hardware failures and determine the appropriate repair path.

Since this has been occurring repeatedly over several years, I would also want to know whether the Pavilion still has its original mechanical HDD or has been upgraded to an SSD.

If you provide the storage test result, Failure ID (if shown), and current drive type/model, I can help determine whether the drive should be replaced or whether further testing is appropriate.

Best regards,
