Re: Connecting to external monitor with laptop - not detecting / **  I was having the same issue, and I fixed this by elimination the docking station. I took the HDMI cord from the external monitor and removed it from the docking station and plugged it directly into the PC.    ** I wish I would have done this sooner instead of spending more money on a different docking station.  I have been fighting this for so long, I will not be able to return one of them.

Hi @Crystal_Crystal,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You're right: bypassing the docking station and plugging the HDMI cable directly into the laptop is often the simplest and most effective fix when an external monitor isn't being detected. Docking stations can introduce compatibility issues, especially if:

  • The dock isn’t fully compatible with your HP laptop model.
  • The firmware or drivers for the dock are outdated.
  • The dock doesn’t support the resolution or refresh rate of the monitor.

If your external monitor isn’t detected, try these steps:

  1. Direct Connection First:
Plug the monitor directly into the laptop (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, etc.) to rule out dock issues.

  2. Check Display Settings:
    • Right-click on the desktop > Display settings.
    • Click Detect under "Multiple displays".

  3. Update Graphics Drivers:
Use HP Support Assistant or go to HP Drivers & Software to update your graphics drivers.

  4. Dock Firmware Update:
If you must use a dock, check the manufacturer’s site for firmware updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
