My laptop display flickers at 144 Hz, and when I change to 60 Hz, the flickering stops, but very thin horizontal lines flicker, which is hard to recognise. Only 2 years old, old laptop.

Hi @Subhamiox987,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Based on your description, the display flickers noticeably at 144 Hz, and while switching to 60 Hz reduces the issue, you can still see faint horizontal lines of flickering. This behavior could be related to the display driver, BIOS, display panel, or the internal display cable.

As a first step, please try performing a BIOS Recovery, even if your BIOS is already up to date:

BIOS Recovery

  1. Turn the notebook completely off.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold the Windows + B keys together.
  4. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B for several more seconds.
  6. If the BIOS Recovery screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions.

After that, please try the following:

  1. Update both the Intel and NVIDIA/AMD graphics drivers from HP's support page for your exact laptop model.
  2. Boot into the BIOS menu (press F10 during startup) and check whether the flickering is visible there as well.
  3. Connect an external monitor and observe whether the flickering appears on the external display.
  4. Gently adjust the screen angle and check whether the flickering changes or worsens at certain positions.
  5. Run the Display Test in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:
    • Turn off the notebook.
    • Turn it on and repeatedly tap Esc
    • Press F2 for Diagnostics.
    • Run the Display Component Test.

Please let us know:

  • The exact HP laptop model.
  • Whether the flickering is visible on the BIOS screen.
  • Whether an external monitor shows the same issue.
  • If the problem started after a Windows update, driver update, or appeared gradually.

If the flickering is present in the BIOS and does not appear on an external monitor, that would point more toward the notebook's display panel or display cable and may require inspection by an HP Authorized Service Center.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
