This question applies to the HP BIOS for a variety of hardware with recent Intel CPUs with the hyperthreading feature.

I have HP P85 UEFI BIOS version 1.14

In the BIOS settings, if I enable "Deep sleep" in the Advanced/Power Management options, hyperthreading is automatically enabled in the Advanced/System options (and then grayed out). To disable hyperthreading, I have to first disable "Deep sleep".

Can someone explain what's going on and why this is? I can't find any documentation or discussion on this.

I think Deep Sleep is HP's way of saying  hibernate. From what I can find, Hyperthreading is on all the time according to

Task Manager and CPU-Z

Search for >  HP Deep Sleep  <  gets quite a few hits and there may be something in one of them.

Thank you, but no. When hyperthreading is enabled, it's enabled. When it's disabled, it's disabled. This is clearly seen in many places, among whch are the number of virtual processors in Windows Task Manager, and more explicitly in apps like Belarc Advisor and geekbench4. Here are two of the latter with hyperthreading enabled and disabled on the same laptop:

See "Topology" under "Processor Information".
