HP EliteBook 840 G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone,

I locked my HP EliteBook 840 G3bios PC equipped with bios n75 ver 1.51 dated 10/20/2020.

While attempting to restore the BIOS to factory settings to remove a HOTKEY error when using the ‘F’ keys, I may have blocked access to the SSD in a configuration that no longer allows booting. It is correctly identified but can no longer boot from it.
For your information, I suspect a partition problem because when I try to reinstall W10, an error appears informing me that the drive has an MBR partition and that it can only be installed on GPT drives.

Does anyone have any information or a working configuration to share with me, please?

Thank you for your help.

Ludo

Hi @Capens ,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

If you are encountering issues with your HP EliteBook 840 G3 where the SSD is not allowing booting after attempting a BIOS reset, and you are facing an MBR/GPT partition error when reinstalling Windows 10, here are the steps to try and resolve these issues:

Verify BIOS Settings:

Access the BIOS by pressing the F10 key during boot-up. Ensure the boot order is set correctly and that the SSD is recognized.
BIOS Settings Reset:

Within the BIOS, you may reset to factory defaults by selecting the option to "Apply Factory Defaults and Exit" from the Main or Advanced menu.
Changing Partition from MBR to GPT:

Backup Data: Ensure you backup any important data before proceeding, as changing partition schemes can erase data.
Convert the Disk:
Boot from Windows installation media.
Open a Command Prompt by pressing Shift + F10 during the setup process.
Use the following commands:
diskpart (to enter DiskPart tool)
list disk (to display disks)
Select the disk you wish to convert with select disk X (replace X with the disk number).
clean (this will erase the disk, be careful)
convert gpt (convert the selected disk to GPT)
Exit DiskPart and continue with the Windows installation.
Reinstalling Windows 10:

Ensure your installation media is bootable and supports UEFI mode, which is required for installation on a GPT disk.
Restart the installation process using the media after the conversion is complete.
These steps should resolve the partition error and allow Windows 10 to be installed on your HP EliteBook 840 G3 with a GPT partition scheme.

For more detailed guidance on BIOS configurations, you can refer to HP's maintenance and service guides or the BIOS simulator for specific models. If the issue persists, consider contacting HP Support for personalized assistance.
