Hi,
I am HP elite book 840 fan, currently I have G5 machine and planning to upgrade to G9.
I searched online and found out that elite book 840 support maximum 2TB of SSD but I want to have 4TB SSD. Is it possible to do so. I can't opt for an external storage, my requirements are such that I need storage on board.
I also read somewhere that if machine has m.2 2280 slot then it should support 4TB, is it true.
Thanks

Yes, an HP EliteBook 840 G9 Notebook PC is compatible with 4TB M.2 NVMe SSDs.
For example, you can see that Crucial shows that 4TB M.2 NVMe SSDs are compatible: HP EliteBook 840 G9 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com.

No, a 4TB drive will not cause overheating issues compared with a lower-capacity drive.
Of course you can use other SSD brands, but I would advise against PRC (Chinese) knock-off brands.

@NonSequitur777
Is there any Bios settings or software configurations I have to consider like partition and format the SSD.
By the way, can the same 4TB SSD upgrade can be performed to HP EliteBook 840 G8.
Thank you.

Yes, just like for an HP EliteBook 840 G9, upgrading to a 4TB SSD in an EliteBook 840 G8 is possible, but here are some considerations come to think of it:
BIOS & Software Configurations:
BIOS Settings:
Ensure UEFI Boot Mode is enabled (usually the default setting).
Disable RAID mode if it's enabled and switch to AHCI mode for better compatibility with most SSDs.
Secure Boot can remain enabled unless you have specific OS requirements.
If cloning an existing drive, verify that the new SSD is detected in the BIOS before proceeding.
Partitioning & Formatting:
If installing Windows from scratch, let the Windows installer handle partitioning.
If cloning an existing drive, ensure the partitioning scheme remains GPT (GUID Partition Table) for UEFI compatibility.
For a fresh install, use NTFS format (for Windows) or exFAT if planning dual-boot with macOS/Linux.
4TB SSD Compatibility:
EliteBook 840 G9: Supports PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSDs; a 4TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD should work.
EliteBook 840 G8: Supports PCIe Gen3 NVMe SSDs, but a PCIe 4.0 SSD will work with PCIe 3.0 I/O speeds.
Check physical space & cooling: HP business laptops usually accommodate single-sided M.2 SSDs, so ensure the 4TB SSD isn’t too thick (double-sided NVMe SSDs might not fit).
