I'd like to purchase and install a M.2 ssd card in this notebook.

Rather confusing. Will different sizes fit (IE: 60mm or 80mm)?

And will the Samsung SSD 850 EVO M.2 1TB & 500GB work?

Hi,

They (840 G3 laptops) have the following options:

SSDs:

● M.2 (2280) 512 GB SATA-3 TLC

● M.2 (2280) 256 GB PCIe-3×4 SS NVMe

● M.2 (2280) 256 GB SATA-3 self-encrypting (Opal 2) MLC

● M.2 (2280) 256 GB SATA-3 TLC

● M.2 (2280) 240 GB SATA-3 MLC DS

● M.2 (2280) 180 GB SATA-3 self-encrypting (Opal 2) MLC

● M.2 (2280) 180 GB SATA-3 MLC

● M.2 (2280) 128 GB SATA-3 TLC

In short, 80mm. Samsung SSD should work but please use Device Manager to check its current brand and buy the SAME brand to make sure compatible.

Regards.

I see one of those M.2 drives says PCIe-3x4, but all of the rest say SATA-3. Will it use PCIe based M.2 drives?

I have the Elitebook 745 G3 and the relevant parts of the product PDF have this same list of M.2 SSDs, I believe.

I posted a question in this forum about installing a 512 GB PCIe SSD (max on the list is 256 GB) but I received no reply.

Well, I went ahead and got the SSD and installed it. It works!

Your experience may differ, however.  I guess the only way to find out is to do it yourself!
