HP 6530b Administrator Password Removal (can enter BIOS with user password)

Just picked up this business class laptop from a work colleague. When I purchased it I was aware that it had an administrator BIOS password and a user BIOS password.I'm logged in but can't temove the admin accountI can log-in using the user password but not the unknown Admin password

The user BIOS password was installed by the previous owner who has passed the password to me, he never knew the administrator BIOS password.

Using the user BIOS password I am able to enter the BIOS and make changes ETC. but I am unable to update the BIOS as this requires the administerator password which is unknown.

When I try to delete the administrator password the facility is greyed out and I am unable to remove the admin user and password, (please see attached photo's)

Can anyone assist me in removing the admin user and password so that I can update the BIOS.

Contact HP and they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.

Insert clean USB flash drive.

Then run USB Image tool.

Choose the flash drive then click on RESTORE.

After restore remove flash drive.

Insert flash drive into locked laptop and boot. ”If HDD is installed remove before booting.”

At C:\OUTPUT   type CD..   “Then hit enter”

Type HPBR   “Then hit enter”

First thing is to save your settings.

Select #3 re-program.

Press “S” to save system information.

Type HPBR and hit enter.

Since your model is not listed select “SHOTGUN.”

After reboot repeat “SHOTGUN” a second time.

I've just been through this doing a clean Windows 10 install on a 6530b. You just have to have the right software and procedure. My problem originated with installing (and using) HP Protect Tools before establishing the admin password in HPT. You need Protect tools in the first place to use the fingerprint reader for a local account.

The basic problem is described at https://support.hp.com/za-en/product/hp-compaq-2230s-notebook-pc/3764975/document/c02753971/.

The procedure there involves SSM, but you really need the BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU). This can be found at http://ftp.hp.com/pub/caps-softpaq/cmit/HP_BCU.html . Older versions may use the syntax described in the document, but newer ones, such as sp81841, which I installed, have a different command line and procedure.

Instead of:

   biosconfigutility.exe /newbiospassword:”[desired password]”

Use:

   cd "\Program Files (x86)\HP\BIOS Configuration Utility"

   HpqPswd.exe [runs the GUI to create a file containing an encrypted (new) password]

   BIOSConfigUtility /nspwdfile:”filename" [the file you just created]

Then follow the steps 1-5 in the document to log into the BIOS with the password you just created, reset the BIOS security, and, in the 2 following boots, clear out users and fingerprints and return the security config to its factory state.
