Hi,

That’s great to hear that your laptop has been working fine since the motherboard replacement and that the issue seems to be resolved! Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I’ll definitely try disabling hibernation with powercfg /hibernate off. Do you know if people leave hibernation permanently disabled, or do they enable it again later on after testing?

Thanks again for sharing the update!

Hi there! Yeah, let's hope it stays this way!!
I don't know what people exactly tried disabling hibernation, I saw a guy posted this potential fix here on reddit, maybe you can ask him.

Same here. Tech decided to change motherboard. In my test bench, I saw that on one of the laptops, the USB-C ports stopped working a few seconds after closing the lid and suspending. Could it be related to power settings, hibernation, suspension, etc.?

I tried powercfg /hibernate off on my Elitebook 840 G9 and it did not solve the issue.

Would be interested in any other fixes beyond changing the motherboard.

I understand that this is sort of an old thread about this issue but it still on going.

The cause is, verified by HP Technical support, BIOS version 01.12.01
It causes issues with power delivery/controller

The TEMPORARY SOLUTIONS are:

Not as effective: holding these keys for 5 seconds arrow up, arrow down, escape. Then power button
Very effective: Disconnect all devices from the laptop (even if there is no battery life left on laptop) Hold power button down for 50 seconds. leave device to sit for 20 seconds. hit power button after the 20 seconds. (at this point plug in power supply to start the device)
Verry Effective: Open rear of laptop, unplug battery (do not plug back in), re install back plate. plug into power, power on (device has to be used as if it was a stationary workstation with external power supplied constantly)

I hope this helps, we have a fleet of 900 G9s out in the wild, and we are getting hit with this issue daily. Awaiting new bios release, 01.12.01 was pulled from the HP driver page and Windows update for the elitebook g9

Rolling  back the BIOS to 01.11.05 has worked for me.

You may get prompted to update the BIOS at some point but you can ignore it until a new BIOS is released

Thanks, for confirming that this is a BIOS v1.12 issue!

Could you please state how exactly you managed to roll back the BIOS?

What tool did you use to roll back the firmware?

When I tried it failed with the error that the USB-C Firmware (which was included in the BIOS bundle) can only be upgraded, not downgraded?

Did you not have this USB-C issue?

I provide a link to the BIOS file. You just need to download and run it on the device. It takes about 7 minutes to complete the install and reboot.

Thank you for the response. I actually already did this (from the old BIOS version file) on two 840 G9 laptops and in the middle of the rollback, it gives an error that the USB-C firmware version is newer. Then it restarts with version 01.11.05, but on the next restart, it goes back to 1.12 without asking. I did this several weeks ago and haven’t tried it again. If you don’t mind, could you tell me when you did the rollback? Maybe they have changed something in the BIOS patch. When I can, I’ll try it with a laptop that still fails, but I won’t be able to until next week. The other one already had the motherboard replaced and it works fine, but it seems like a very drastic solution.

Thanks in advance.

Reverting to the previous version provided a temporary solution; however, the automatic update reinstalled version U71 Ver. 01.12.01, causing the issue to reoccur.
