Hello HP Community,

I hope everyone is doing well today. I have an interesting and strange query regarding my HP ProBook 4540s. I wanted to upgrade the CPU in the machine as I could see in the Service Manual from HP that it is possible. However, when I got the Core i5 CPU to replace the Core i3, and stripped the machine down to get to the processor. I found that there is no release latch, to perform a CPU Upgrade. I am very confused and have seen tutorials online, in the service manual and on other HP Support Forums about performing this very procedure. Any help and guidance with this, would be very much appreciated.

Here are the specs of my machine if that helps:

CPU: Intel Core i3-3110M @2.4GHz

RAM: 8GB DDR3

Storage: 240GB SSD

GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Hi:

Yes, unfortunately, if you look at chapter 3, page 28 of the service manual, some 4540s models with the Intel i3 processors came with motherboards where those processors were an integral part of the motherboard.

There'd be no way of knowing that unless you took the notebook apart before buying one of the removable processors since page 20 shows that the i3-3110M also came as a removable processor.

Hello Paul_Tikkanen,

Thank you for reaching out to me about this. I have rechecked my service manual for this machine and it does say that there is a version of my laptop with the same CPU I have, that is soldered to the motherboard. Including a version that has the CPU socketed.

It is admittedly frustrating and annoying, as I went out my way to find a new CPU for it, only to find that my £8 Processor won’t work in the machine I wanted to put it in.
