Hi @Obosire,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issues you're describing with your HP ProBook—frequent restarting, hanging after restart, and occasional overheating—are likely caused by a combination of software, hardware, or thermal management issues. Below are possible causes and solutions.

Overheating

  • Cause: Dust buildup in the cooling system, malfunctioning fan, or dried-out thermal paste can cause overheating, leading to system instability.
  • Solutions:
    • Clean the vents and fans: Use compressed air to clean the vents and fans to improve airflow.
    • Check fan functionality: Ensure the fans spin properly when the system is under load.
    • Reapply thermal paste: If the laptop is older, consider reapplying thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.
    • Use a cooling pad: For additional cooling support.

Failing Hardware Components

  • Cause: A failing hard drive, RAM issues, or a malfunctioning motherboard can cause restarts and hangs.
  • Solutions:
    • Run HP Diagnostics: Restart your laptop and press F2 or Esc repeatedly to access the HP Diagnostics Tool. Run a full hardware scan to identify failing components.
    • Check RAM: If diagnostics show no errors, reseat the RAM or test it using MemTest86.
    • Test the hard drive: Use tools like CrystalDiskInfo to check for bad sectors.

Outdated or Corrupted Drivers

  • Cause: Corrupt drivers, particularly for graphics or chipset, can lead to instability.
  • Solutions:
    • Update drivers: Use HP Support Assistant to update all drivers or visit the official HP website for your ProBook model.
    • Roll back drivers: If the issue started after an update, roll back the problematic drivers via Device Manager.

Software or OS Issues

  • Cause: Corrupted operating system files or buggy software can cause restarts and freezes.
  • Solutions:
    • Scan for viruses/malware: Use a trusted antivirus program to check for malware.
    • Check Event Viewer: Look for error logs in Windows Event Viewer (Win + X > Event Viewer) to identify software causing crashes.
    • Repair the OS: Run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in Command Prompt to repair system files.
    • Consider a clean reinstall: If issues persist, back up your data and reinstall Windows.

BIOS or Firmware Issues

  • Cause: Outdated or corrupted BIOS firmware can lead to instability.
  • Solutions:
    • Update the BIOS: Check for the latest BIOS version on HP's support page for your ProBook model. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid issues.

Power Supply or Battery Issues

  • Cause: A faulty charger, power adapter, or battery can cause erratic behavior.
  • Solutions:
    • Check the charger: Ensure it provides the correct voltage and wattage.
    • Test with the battery removed: Use the laptop plugged into the power adapter without the battery to rule out battery issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
