Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have been stung twice in buying what looks like a current model HP only to find out it was released over 5 years ago.

Is there a site to look up by product name or model number when the system was released?

Hi:

Unfortunately, there isn't.

The closest thing you can come to is to google '(Model of business class PC) Quickspecs.'

You will then get a pdf page with a document date containing all of the major specs for the model.

Let's use your soon to be returned Elitebook 840 G1 as an example.

I googled 840 G1 quickspecs.

https://noteboox.de/mediafiles/Sonstiges/HP-EliteBook-840-G1-QuickSpecs.pdf

You will note the date of the document.  This may be a bit newer than the actual release date of the model, but it will be in the ballpark.

Within that document will be all of the supported operating systems, hardware specs, options, etc.

If you haven't boxed up your 840 G1 yet, take a look at the serial number.

From that number, you can get the actual manufacturing date right down to the week of the calendar year.

Just look at the 4th, 5th and 6th characters in the serial number.

They will always be numbers.

the 4th character = the year of manufacture.  For example, a 3 = 2013, 4 = 2014 and so on.

Now of course that number could be 1993, 2003, or 2023, so you will have to have a reasonable idea of the hardware the PC comes with as compared to what existed back when.

The 5th and 6th characters of the serial number = the calendar week of manufacture from 01 - 52.
