I've been using this brand new (out of the box) Mobile Workstation for 7 months, but since then I've been checking the battery capacity and now for some reason makes some big jumps degrading the capacity, days ago i had it on 87% and now it is on 77%!

 

How is this possible?

 

I know HP limits the capacity dynamically but this seems like too much and I really need my battery. Due to the power of this machine and my workloads, i always use it while charging, so i choose the option for maximize battery health, other than that, i always turn on 'Let HP Manage my battery' when I'm not doing anything out of league.

 

What can I do to fix this issue?

Hello.

 

The battery may not report the remaining charge correctly. Start with a battery calibration for which HP has instructions:

HP Notebook PCs - Testing and calibrating the battery (Windows) | HP® Support.

 

If the calibration does not help, perhaps the battery really has lost 23% of its capacity.

 

The battery is covered by your laptop warranty, however it does not cover natural degradation of capacity over time. I personally think that losing 23% in 7 months would be abnormal in normal use.

 

HP has an article about battery warranty. Read it carefully, then contact HP and make a warranty request:

HP Notebooks PCs - Understanding the notebook battery warranty | HP® Support

 

Also note that you can change the way the laptop manages your battery. Either from BIOS settings or using HP Power Manager in Windows you can extend the battery life by capping it at 80%, but you can also opt for the full battery reserve in case you need the extra boost in your work.

Thank you so much for your answer. I followed the instructions and, although HP Diagnostics didn't let me calibrate the battery, discharging the battery with the memory test and then doing a full charge did fix this issue. Somehow the percentage jumped back to 90%. I still feel weird about this result though, maybe is the Health manager doing it's business.  My cycle count was 116
