Not sure if I have selected the correct board for this, but hopefully I will receive a response, redirecting if necessary.

Problem: Found that a USB stick given by a friend for me to upload files to was not recognised by Disk Management on my 350G2 Win 10 64 bit, (Version 22H2 (10.0.19045) whereas some others were. Also an external usb  hdd is not recognised. These items are, however, recognised on an old Win 7 HP 6715b laptop.

Device Manager highlighted that the SM Bus Controller driver could not be found and its manufacturer was unknown.

Intel Chipset Software Install Utility reported  as follows:- "0x00004E24 This platform not supported".

This may be associated with changes which were made by a company unfortunately no longer available. The ssd was taken out of the 350G2 and placed in a Lenovo laptop, which subsequently was returned. The ssd was replaced in the 350G2 along with a new screen and touchpad. This was several months ago, and the usb sockets have not been used until now.

The external hdd worked OK several months before the above changes.

I cannot find drivers via the HP site for other than Windows 11 and so I'm  now stuck!

Any ideas, please?

Hi, Peter:

You don't need to uninstall the existing windows installation.

A clean install means you won't be able to boot into the current Windows installation, and you will have have to reinstall any drivers, programs and files you need to put back on the notebook.

All that will be on there is Windows.

When you get to the screen that asks, 'Where do you want to install Windows,' if you let it install on the existing Windows partition, it will create a Windows.old folder and after Windows installs, you can explore the Windows.old folder, find your old user profile and copy the folders (documents, music, photos, downloads, etc.) from your old user profile to the new one, and it will overwrite the empty folders.

That would save you some time with reinstalling files.

You need this driver for your notebook's SMBus controller:

Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver

10.1.1.7

sp72068.exe

Thanks Paul

I had already used the sp70268.exe which returned the previously stated 0x00004E24 message, but I downloaded from your link anyway, ran it and restarted the laptop to find that the USB stick was still not recognised in Disc Management. However, this time Device Manager did not show any trace of the SM Bus Controller!

What should I do now, please?

Does any USB stick work in your notebook?

The SMBus controller had nothing to do with the USB ports not working.

W10 automatically installs the USB drivers, and none exist to be downloaded.

I recommend that you clean install W10 on your PC and see if that resolves the problem.

Download Windows 10

Most likely swapping the drive from one totally different model PC to another corrupted the system files and is not fixable.

Yes, I have a couple of sticks that do work.

Not confident to re-install  Win 10.

Guidance appreciated.

Thanks.

It's possible that if other USB flash drives are working the ones that don't are not supported to run on W10.

In any event, if you want to try clean installing W10, here is a step by step guide to do that.

A Step-by-Step Tutorial on Creating a Bootable USB and Installing Windows 10 - Tuts Master 😉

You can create a bootable W10 USB installation flash drive with the Microsoft media creation tool from the link below:

Download Windows 10

To boot from the W10 installation media on your PC have the USB flash drive plugged into a USB port.

Turn on or restart the PC.

Immediately tap...tap...tap...the ESC key to get the menu of options.

Select the F9 boot options menu and select the (U)EFI USB flash drive with W10 on it and press the Enter key.

The PC should boot from the USB flash drive and the W10 installation files will begin to install.

When you get to the part that asks what version of W10 you want to install, select the version of W10 on your PC now--Home or Pro.

Then you will be asked to enter a product key.

Select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and then activate after you are connected to the internet.

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

If you get the missing SMBus controller driver, you know what driver you need to install for that.

Paul

Having reviewed the situation I've decided not to pursue it further for now, as I do at least have a backup laptop which can be used if necessary, and I can make do.

Thanks very much for your valued assistance.

Peter

PS This was written before I'd seen your reply with detailed instructions - I may reconsider!

You're very welcome, Peter.

Just one more thing ,Paul, if you don't mind - as an Oldie I feel somewhat overwhelmed by it all!

If I do a clean install, do I have to uninstall the existing Windows , or will it be overwritten, and will all my settings, existing files etc be lost?

I should also say that I do have my important stuff backed up onto a NAS drive, so the latter would not be disastrous, just very time consuming and tedious.

Regards.
