Summary of Issue

Beginning March 19, 2026, our public school district experienced a marked increase in end‑user incidents related to intermittent yet persistent Windows system freezing on HP laptops. The issue impacts multiple HP G8 platforms and correlates with System BIOS version 01.23.00.

Affected devices freeze during active use, becoming fully unresponsive (keyboard, mouse, and power button). A hard power cycle is required to recover. Event logs and OS diagnostics generally do not record actionable errors, suggesting a failure below the operating system level.


Affected Models (Confirmed)

  • HP ZBook Firefly 14 inch G8
  • HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8

Both models are confirmed to be running System Management BIOS version 01.23.00.


Timeline

  • Pre‑3/19/26: No elevated freezing or stability reports on these models
  • 3/19/26 onward: Sudden increase in freezing‑related tickets across multiple sites
  • Late March 2026: HP briefly released BIOS 01.24.00, which is no longer publicly available
  • Current state: Devices remaining on 01.23.00 continue to freeze intermittently throughout the day

Actions Already Taken

  • Disabled Global HP Connect BIOS Update Policy to prevent further propagation
  • Confirmed freezing persists on systems already running BIOS 01.23.00
  • Verified issue reproduces across multiple users, locations, and hardware units
  • OS patching, driver updates, reboots, and reimages have not resolved the issue

Observations Supporting Firmware Involvement

  • Multiple hardware models affected simultaneously
  • Common BIOS version across affected devices
  • No correlation with a specific Windows update or application
  • Symptoms consistent with low‑level power/ACPI or firmware instability
  • Subsequent BIOS version (01.24.00) appeared briefly and was later withdrawn

Request

We are requesting:

  1. Confirmation of any known defects or internal advisories related to BIOS 01.23.00 on HP G8 platforms
  2. Guidance on recommended mitigation (rollback, interim settings, or workarounds)
  3. Status update on availability of a corrected BIOS release
  4. Escalation to HP Engineering for review, if not already under active investigation

This issue is having a material impact on end‑user productivity and instructional continuity.

I can confirmed the issue.

Unit will freeze up when going into low voltage mode. (or standby mode).

Solution for now is

downgrade Bios to 1.22

and go into the Bios  then 

lock the bios update.

System will works perfectly fine.

Hi everyone

We can confirm the same issue in our environment. In our case, more than 200 identical HP devices with the same system configuration are affected. The devices had been running without any issues before.

Since around mid-April 2026, we have been observing the same behaviour on our HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8 devices. During normal use, the devices suddenly freeze completely, mostly when there is no active user input. After that, the keyboard and mouse no longer respond. There is never a bluescreen. The only way to recover is a forced restart.

 

Affected model in our environment:

HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8
BIOS: T93 Ver. 01.23.00
Windows 11 24H2 / Build 26100.8246

 

The issue occurs independently of the user and cannot be clearly explained by the Windows event logs. No minidumps and no MEMORY.DMP files are generated. Standard measures such as restarting, Windows updates, installing the latest drivers, driver updates, or disabling LAN/WLAN have not resolved the issue so far.

 

Example freeze times on one affected device:

19.05.2026 10:55:42

 

From our point of view, this also indicates an issue below the operating system level, most likely in the BIOS/firmware area.

We would therefore also be very interested in feedback from HP or in a reliable workaround.

Greetings. Thank you for providing additional information pertaining to this issue. It has assisted with our troubleshooting efforts.

We have observed some stability on ZBook Firefly G8's with:

 

  • T76 01.23.00, 11/6/25
  • 23H2 Build 22631.7079 (2026-05 KB's)

    However, BIOS Update version 01.24.02 is now available through BIOS Setup, which we will test as well.

Confirmed the Bios 1.24.02 works on Windows 11 25H2.

Need hook up a USB-C Ethernet adapter

F10 go to bios and perform a Bios Update Directly from Main screen.

Works perfectly fine.

tested over 5 unit and never freeze up.

On the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G8 with Windows 11 24H2 and the latest BIOS version 01.24.02, I am unfortunately still experiencing freezes.

In my case, the issue does not seem to be resolved with this BIOS version.
