Hi there, I am facing usb port issue on my laptop. When I connect the wireless mouse or wired mouse in the left usb port, it intermittently detects and undetects the device for some time. It happens a lot when on battery and the frequency reduces when connected to the power. It happens more frequently in the initial 10 minutes after I turn on my laptop. Then occassionly happens during the use.
This issue started when I updated the windows version from 23h2 to 24h2.
I tried many things to resolve this based on the suggestions from internet such as I fresh installed 25h2 version, unchecked the power management option from the device manager, uninstalled and installed the driver from device manager, updated chipset and bios from hp website. Nothing solved the problem. Also, I run the dignostic test of USB and memory, and it was normal and test result showed no issue.
Now, I am seeking the help from community, if anyone knows how to solve this please let me know.
Thank you

Hi @No_one_
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I understand how inconvenient it feels when a USB port intermittently disconnects devices, especially after you’ve already tried reinstalling drivers, updating BIOS and chipset, and even running diagnostics.
You’ve been very thorough, so let’s focus on a few deeper checks that can help stabilize the left USB port behavior.
Windows Updates
- After moving from 23H2 to 24H2 and then 25H2, some USB controller drivers may not have aligned properly.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install all optional updates, especially those under “Driver updates.”
Device Manager – Hidden Devices
- Open Device Manager (right-click Start > Device Manager).
- Click View > Show hidden devices.
- Expand “Universal Serial Bus controllers.”
- Right-click each “USB Root Hub” and “Generic USB Hub,” select “Uninstall device,” then restart the laptop. Windows will reinstall them fresh.
HP Support Assistant
- Install or open HP Support Assistant from HP Software and Driver Downloads.
- Run a full check for driver and firmware updates. This tool often refreshes USB controller drivers specific to your model.
Power Settings for USB
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand “USB settings” > “USB selective suspend setting.”
- Set both “On battery” and “Plugged in” to “Disabled.”
- Apply and restart.
Test with Different Devices
- Connect another USB device (such as a flash drive) to the left port.
- Observe if the same intermittent detection occurs. This helps confirm whether the issue is port-specific or device-specific.
BIOS Default Reset
- Restart the laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.
- Choose “Restore Defaults” and save changes.
- This clears any misconfiguration that may have occurred during updates.
HP Diagnostics via HP App
- Open the HP App on Windows.
- Select your laptop, then go to “Troubleshooting & fixes.”
- Run “Diagnose & Fix” to automatically check for USB controller issues.
The key is to refresh the USB controller drivers completely, disable selective suspend, and ensure BIOS defaults are restored. Once these steps are completed, the port should behave more consistently both on battery and while plugged in.

Thank you for your follow-up, and I appreciate the steps you've already taken to troubleshoot this USB issue.
Since the “USB selective suspend setting” isn’t visible in your Power Options, let’s walk through how to make it appear and disable it properly.
Steps to Enable and Disable USB Selective Suspend Setting
1. Open Power Options
- Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter.
- Go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Click Change plan settings next to your active plan (e.g., Balanced).
- Click Change advanced power settings.
2. Enable USB Selective Suspend Setting (if missing)
If you don’t see “USB settings”:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Run the following command:
powercfg -attributes SUB_USB 2a737441-1930-4402-8d77-b2bebba308a3 -ATTRIB_HIDE - This unhides the USB selective suspend setting.
3. Disable USB Selective Suspend
- Return to Advanced Power Settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
- Set both On battery and Plugged in to Disabled.
- Click Apply and OK.
4. Restart Your Laptop
- Restart to apply the changes fully.
Let me know if the setting appears after running the command. Once disabled, this should reduce power-related interruptions to your USB port, especially during startup and battery use.
You're doing a great job narrowing this down.
Take care, and have an incredible day ahead!

Hi No_one_, thank you! This is helpful. It helped to resurface the usb options, but unfortunately it did not resolve the main issue. My machine freezes in both idle and active state. Since I noticed that it also happens during fast mouse movements, and I also lost connection with usb devices often, I was hoping that this would resolve my issue. Apparently it has to do with the windows 11 25H2 release.
