Hi,
is there any chance of using a "Samsung NVMe SSD 960 Pro" on a HP Elitebook 1040 G1?
We have bought one because the storage was to short and we wanted to upgrade to 500GB.
The Problem is that the 1040G1 doesent even recognise the SSD.
Please help.
Regards,
Harald

An M.2 NVMe SSD is unlikely to be compatible with your notebook. The NVMe controller is the issue.
See the following Crucial memeory web document for a guaranteed compatible 500GB M.2 (NGFF) SSD
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/elitebook-folio-1040-g1
For Samsung SSD 850 EVO M.2 (V-NAND) SSD compatible

For your question about a 1040 G3
Yes. It is compatible with the NVMe single sided 2280 M.2 SSD
For the HP EliteBook 1040 G2 it is compatible with the Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SATA SSD
HP Omen 15 and 17" - some models. I can find a list of some that are known to have support for NVMe
Spectre 13-v000 series Yes
Spectre 13-3000 series Yes
Spectre x360 - 13t-ac000 series Yes
Here is a link to a list of notebooks of various models and brands compiled at a third party website for NGFF M.2 SSD compatibility with

Hi, Erico. Sorry for bothering you via long solved thread but I have quite similar issue, and your advice could help a lot.
I have checked the HP guide and it seems that only three ssds are compatible (128, 180 and 256 gb)
http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c04035571-1.pdf
That doesn't make much sense, especially, considering your replies above. So, I'm wondering whether I will be good to upgrade with any other SSDs (250gb or 500gb) incase they are V-NAND TLC and made in M2. form factor with SATA III. + One sided memory chip, of course.
For instance, Samsung 860 Evo-Series 250GB M.2 SATA III V-NAND TLC
Thanks much beforehand

No worries.
Those capacities are just the ones that HP sells as options and not the only SSD capacities that will work. Bear in mind that the Maintenance & Service guides were written for the use of HP Service Engineers in Service Centers. They just happen to be useful technical references to people who know their way around tech manuals.
You can also use the manufacturer websites to see what they guarantee as being compatible They do have a lot to lose if what they are stating is inaccurate. For an example, use Elitebook 1040 G1 Crucial memory as keywords in a search. The result is in the link below this line.
