ZBook over heats in sleep mode, lid closed.

While sitting on my side table, plugged into power, with the lid closed and no programs open It starting making a very load fan noise. When I unplugged the Zbook and picked it up it was extremely hot! Hotter than any Mac or PC laptop I've ever owned. It was getting almost too hot to hold so I opened whelp top and tried scan in but it was sluggish and non responsive. I finally got in and shut the power off. It immediately stopped all fan noise and was noticeably cooling down. This is a terrifying problem if I can not leave my lap top alone in my study without the threat of runaway overheating and possible fire. Like I said the unit is brand new and I have only loaded three programs on it.

Is this  a defective unit? Is it fixable?  Thanks Tom

I have the same problem. The laptop is very hot when close the lid.

This actually  is a "feature" believe it or not!

Do NOT put your ZBOOK in sleep mode.  It is not the sleep mode we know from the past.

On Modern Laptops, the sleep mode (S0 Mode) is called Modern Standby and  allows the laptop to work and connect to networks.  This caused Fan to run and overheat in backpacks.

Solution:

1) Check here how to switch off Network Access in sleep mode:

2) Do no use sleep mode. I use Hibernate ONLY. on Zbook G7 It little slower but Laptop is 100% off .

Also Google how to disable Windows Maintenance tasks and background apps, Check Task Scheduler.
