  • BIOS update from USB or BIOS menu redirects to Windows and fails, even when using an HP-created recovery USB.

  • BIOS recovery key combinations (Win + B / Win + V) do not activate recovery mode.

  • The BIOS option “Update System and Supported Device Firmware Using Local Media” exits BIOS and boots Windows without flashing.

  • The behavior persists after:

    • Clean Windows installation

    • Disabling Core Isolation / VBS

    • Resetting BIOS settings

    • Using HP-provided drivers

Hi @al2203,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. I can hear how exhausting this has been, especially after trying every standard recovery path. Thank you for laying out the symptoms so clearly; that helps a lot.

What to do now, step by step

1) Enter BIOS and confirm “Program Mode” / missing System IDs

  1. Power on and tap Esc repeatedly to open the HP Startup Menu.
  2. Press F10 for BIOS Setup.
  3. Look for System Information, System IDs, or Manufacturing Programming Mode pages.
    • If you see blanks for Product Name, SKU (Product Number), Serial Number, Board CT, Feature Byte, and Build ID, you’ve found the cause.

Tip: On many models, Esc → F10 is the standard path to BIOS. If you miss the timing, just retry.

2) Collect your exact identifiers (no guessing)

Use only what belongs to your device:

  • Chassis label (rear/bottom/side): usually lists Serial Number and Product Number (SKU).
  • Motherboard sticker(s): often list System Board CT, Feature Byte, and sometimes Build ID.

These values are unique to your PC; do not copy values from the web or another system. Using the wrong IDs can keep you stuck in Program Mode and may affect activation and thermal tables. (This is the same guidance we provide in our community solution.)

3) Re‑enter System IDs in BIOS

Inside BIOS (same menus as above):

  • Enter Product Name, Product Number (SKU), and Serial Number.
  • If prompted, also enter System Board CT, Feature Byte, and Build ID.
  • Save and exit (usually F10 → Yes).

Once these fields are properly restored, the PC exits Program Mode and the firmware update paths unlock. This is the turning point that allows flashing to proceed normally.

4) Run the BIOS update again (any of these will work now)

  • In Windows: Launch the HP Firmware Update and Recovery package for your model.
  • From BIOS: Esc → F10 → BIOS Update / Update system and supported device firmware using local media, pointing to your HP recovery USB.
  • Recovery hotkeys: Win+B (or Win+V) during power‑on should now invoke BIOS recovery if needed.

All of these paths rely on valid System IDs; once restored, they function as expected.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
