HP Z820 Workstation

I am receiving this error message at bootup 517 - Memory fan not detected. This may or may not have something to do with a power outage that occured yesterday evening (Friday August 09, 2024 - 19:30) Possibly due to the remnants of Hurricane Debbie. The Z820 is protected by a 1500W UPS

I removed the shroud assembly and re-inserted 3-4 times followed by a reboot. The error seems to have vanished. But, of course I do not feel comfortable. @DGroves had mentioned using hwinfo64 to monitor the individual fans (at least that is what I understood) I am running Unraid on the Z820 and was wondering if I could install / use hwinfo64 in a virtual machine. If not what can I use if anything to boot to a USB flash drive and then run those fan tests.

Your time and assistance will be greatly appreciated. Peter

fan control script for unRAID which every 5 minutes checks the state or array drives and calculates a new PWM value. If anything goes wrong or a scrub is started it will fall back to 255/100%.

the z820/840 systems have a large black removable fan shroud that covers the cpu's ram, and a large part of the motherboard

inside this shroud are the systems cooling fans you will have one fan each for the cpu's

and one fan each for the memory areas/motherboard,  all fans are replaceable

and each fan's power leads are routed to a central area where the power lead can be unplugged

if a cooling fan fails and needs replacement

also near this area is the main shroud power connector that mates with the motherboard

if necessary remove the shroud, and check that all fans spin freely and use a (PROPER) electronic contact cleaner on the shroud plug

you either had a bad memory fan or a bad shroug plug contact in the connector that glitched during the power grid failure

if the error warning has not reappeared on reboots you have no problems and need not worry

fans can be monitored by the HP performance advisor

Hello @DGroves Long time no chat. It's been quite a while since we last discussed the Adaptec ASR-71605 card that I purchased and that you helped me configure. It is working marvelously well by the way.

After submitting my initial post I powered down the Z820, removed the shroud, and used my air compressor to blow out any dust that had accumulated on the shroud and fans. I have only had the unit for six months give or take and am was amazed at the fine film of dust that had accumulated. I then inserted / removed the shroud 2-3 times until the error no longer appeared. As I mentioned in my original post I am running Unraid on the Z820 and am not sure as to how I would go about verifying the shroud fans in the future. Thank you so for your time and expertise. I appreciate it immensely. Peter
