Hi,

Issue: Integrated 720p HD camera (Chicony) stopped working - never enumerates - on Linux — absent from `lsusb`, no `/dev/video`,  no dmesg probe .  Root Cause: Probably Hardware-level failure — camera USB port not powered** (missing in `/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb3/`). BIOS/FW: Already updated to latest (`$(sudo dmidecode -s bios-version)`). No camera toggle in BIOS.

Hello Tee894,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Troubleshooting Camera Issues on HP ZBook Firefly 15 inch G8 with MX Linux 23 (Debian)

If your camera has stopped working on your HP ZBook Firefly 15-inch G8 running MX Linux 23 (Debian), there's a set of common troubleshooting steps you can follow:

  1. Check Camera Privacy Settings:

    • Ensure that the camera is not blocked by any privacy settings. Check if there's a physical shutter or a switch/keyboard shortcut that controls the camera.
  2. Verify Hardware Connection:

    • Make sure that the camera is properly connected and recognized by the system. You can use the lsusb command in the terminal to list USB devices and confirm if the camera is detected.
  3. Check for Detected Hardware:

    • Open a terminal and run:
      ls /dev/video*

    • You should see something like /dev/video0 (if the camera is detected).
  4. Test the Camera:

    • Use a software application that can access the camera, such as Cheese (a webcam application). Install it using:
      sudo apt-get install cheese

    • Launch Cheese to check if the camera works.
  5. Verify Drivers:

    • Ensure that the correct drivers are installed. Run:
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get upgrade

    • This will ensure you have the latest packages.
  6. Check Kernel Modules:

    • Look for necessary kernel modules for webcam support. Verify that uvcvideo module is loaded:
      lsmod | grep uvcvideo

    • If not loaded, you can manually load it by running:
      sudo modprobe uvcvideo

  7. Consult HP Support:

    • If none of the above steps work, consulting HP support or checking their documentation for your model may offer specific guidance related to camera and software issues on Linux.

For ongoing support, you may want to contact HP technical support or refer to their documentation online to ensure compatibility and additional solutions specific to your HP ZBook Firefly.
