Solved!

Can I Use A USB-C Dock With My Desktop PC So I Can Also Swap Easily To My Laptop?

HP USB-C Dock G5, HP Prodesk PC, HP Probook 440 X360 G1
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello.

I am in the process of replacing my work PC.  I have a desktop PC with dual screens (displayport) and I am running Windows 10.

In addition to the wired PC (which is must have and lives in the office for me) I have HP Probook 440 X360 G1 laptop that I use both at work and at home. At home I use a HP USB-C Dock G5 dock which allows me to connect my laptop's USB type-C connector to the HP USB-C Dock G5 dock and that gives me dual screens at home with keyboard and mouse etc.  It works an absolute treat and charges my laptop via the single USB cable etc.

My question is, if I wanted to have the same setup at work but also have a Prodesk PC in the mix, could I have the Prodesk connected to the HP USB-C Dock G5 dock for regular use (I guess the Prodesk PC would need to have a USB type-C that supported alternate mode displayport to drive the monitors at my desk?) can it be done so that I could simply arrive with my work laptop (on occasion), unplug the USB type-C connection from the Prodesk PC from the dock and plug in my laptop to use the screens, keyboard and mouse instead?

I basically want to be able to to mostly use the PC with the dual displayport screens in the office (with the mouse and keyboard) but then occasionally plug in my laptop instead to drive both screens, the keyboard and mouse by simply swapping over one cable and keeping things tidy and simple and charging my laptop up etc.

I am planning on having the Prodesk PC directly LAN wired and the laptop is wireless so I won't be using the dock's LAN connection for networking.

Does anyone know whether a Prodesk PC will work with the HP USB-C Dock G5 dock and whether I can achieve this simple setup?  If so, will need to have a USB type-C that supports alternate mode displayport output to do so? (an example Prodesk model would be great, please, so I can see the specs).

Thanks

short answer is no, the prodesk would need usb (3.1 gen 1 or 2) and the same hardware/software which the laptop has

long answer possibly, if you can find the equivalents for the system but  it will not be the exact same thing as the laptop due to different hardware and software start by looking at usb to video adapters or a system that has a cpu with integrated graphics
