Can an Intel Core i7-7700 be replaced by an Intel Core i7-8700, in an HP ProDesk 600 G3 PC?

Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade your HP ProDesk 600 G3 SFF with an Intel Core 8th gen processor.

The very best processor compatible with your PC is an i7-7700K.

Regardless, there are a number of reliable upgrade methods developed so that you can upgrade to Windows 11, such as this easy-to-follow YouTube instructional video shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=lSrmhhigEhY&t=332s&ab_channel=Tips2Fix.

In the off chance you don't like W11, you have 10 days to roll back to Windows 10. After 10 days, unless you follow the steps outlined in this instructional video, you may need to do a fresh install of Windows 10. What is the implication of the "K"?

I am not into over clocking and just swap on a one for one basis.

I am confident I can swap out the non "K" Version.

If using the "K" Version requires some additional tweaking, it's probably out of my league.

What's you take on using the "K" Version.

Excellent question: the Intel Core "K" processors would indeed allow you to overclock, but that is something an HP ProDesk 600 G3 SFF doesn't allow you to do.

The reason I mentioned the i7-7700K is that it is the very best performing processor compatible with your PC.

Here you can see how an i7-7700K compares with your i7-7700: UserBenchmark: Intel Core i7-7700 vs i7-7700K.

Please note that the i7-7700K has a 91-watt TDP vs a 65-watt TDP for your i7-7700: meaning, an i7-7700K runs hotter than your i7-7700.

However, this is easily remedied by upgrading your stock 65-watt heatsink with a 95-watt rated heatsink with p/n: 644724-001 / 810285-001 "Heatsink - 95W, Kidd", which you can purchase very inexpensively (under $12) via eBay, such as this purchase option: https://www.ebay.com/itm/176351543584?_skw=644724-001&epid=19018434644&itmmeta=01JWXXY6BD9SR782A8YBD....

I ordered a "K" CPU and the Fan for the extra heat.

It will be about a week before I have both available to work with.

My assumption with the "K" CPU is that I will:

REMOVE the existing CPU.

Clean the Heat Sink of access OLD Thermal Paste.

Insert the "K" CPU.

ADD Thermal Paste to the top of the "K" CPU.

Attach the Heat Sink.

Fire it up and the "K" CPU will provide the add boost "without and fiddling".

Am I correct?

And yes: that is affirmative: plug & play: easy-peasy!

Prior to you upgrading your processor, make sure that you got the latest BIOS version (00.02.51 Rev.A) as found here: HP ProDesk 600 G3 Small Form Factor PC Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support.

Also, use a quality thermal paste such as Arctic MX-4.
