HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Microtower PC
Microsoft Windows 11

There was an earlier thread regarding this issue but had an additional question.  I am looking to upgrade my desktop processor to meet standards for Windows 11 compatibility.   I have a Ryzen 7 Pro 2700x (replacing a Ryzen5 PRO 2400g) which when installed will not POST.  After much searching I finally figured out the "g" designation on the processors indicates built in graphics.  So the 2700x does not have built in graphics.  Looking at the HP docs, it indicates the baseboard will support the Ryzen 7 Pro 2700x.  I was looking at the Ryzen 5 3400g but the previous post on this site had an answer saying the Elitedesk 705 series will not support the 3 series Ryzen chips. I am trusting that is correct so holding off on buying and returning a processor.

My question is, can I run the 7 PRO 2700x and add a video card to meet the needs?

@Xipit,

Looking at HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Microtower (MT) benchmarks here, I noticed that this PC came with a variety of motherboards with SSID: 8460, 8461, or 83E7.

You can check your motherboard's SSID by typing in: System Information in your lower Windows search bar, and by clicking on the System Information app, and by looking to the right of: "BaseBoard Product", where you'll find your SSID.

Point is, based on the available Userbenchmark User data, only the SSID: 8460 motherboard is compatible with either the Ryzen 7 PRO 2700X or the Ryzen 7 PRO 2700.

Kind Regards,

Thanks NonSequitur777

Unfortunately my baseboard is an 83E7.  Well on to plan B.  I have located a renewed unit that is compatible so I am going to be converting my old one into a small Linux server to replace some RaspberryPi functionality I am running (Print Server..PiHole.....).  I know its not a powerhouse but more than sufficient to do what I am wanting to do.  It is still a hard working and very functional unit (credit to HP).

Hi, my board is 8463. Will it support 2700 or 2700X

HP Recommended

@Addy_dxb,

Unfortunately, no.

Only the HP EliteDesk 705 G4 SFF with motherboard SSID: 8460/8462 is compatible with the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 2700/X processors.

Would you know part number for 8460 board? I saw your other posts where you mentioned 8460 supports 2700X

HP Recommended

@Addy_dxb,

That is a really good question.

I don't think I can give you a specific part number as HP, apparently, uses multiple, interchangeable and slightly differently configured motherboards with the same part number -at least for your PC.

The only way I can think of to make sure you are getting the correct motherboard (SSID 8460 or 8462) is to ask the Seller to provide you with the motherboard's SSID.

appreciate your support. Would you know if 8463 supports R5 pro 2400g or what is the max supported processor i can install?

the HP 705 G5 came in three different sizes  Mini, small Form Factor (SFF) and Microtower

and in all my time i've only seen one motherboard model used in each model size's  formfactor the differing SSID might be due to motherboard revisions?

i also have read this post

for some reason HP seems to have simply lumped all three formfactor systems together when listing the video and cpu  capabilities causing a true cluster "F" trying to nail down each formfactor's actual cpu/video capabilities. way to go HP! (not)
