Edit:  for both the Z420 and the Z620 the right side bar code label number can be -002 or -003 to get a version 2.

Don't discount the bang for the buck you get with a Z420 version 2.  A large number of us run only 1 processor in our Z620s so it actually is the equivalent of a Z420 for quite a bit more money.  However, nice case and internal components......

Yep.  That is a version 2.

If you were buying a version 2 used motherboard to transplant into a version 1 Z620 case there is nothing on the motherboard that tells you whether it is "branded" as a Windows or a Linux motherboard.  When they are branded that is a 1-time deal.  This has mainly to do with using the HP OEM COA builds from the Recovery discs.... one of those can be cloned into another same type HP workstation.

If you get a good deal on that one you can look on one of the bottom case labels and see in little letters if it is a Windows or Linux original.

Bambi.... i missed your comment in the second to the last paragraph in your post above the first time around:

"As others have mentioned, changing the motherboard to a second version (Part Number: 708610-001) is not difficult."  That statement is incorrect..........

The numbers on the left side of the bar code label have little to do with the version 1 or version 2 issue.  It is the single number on the right side of that label you want.

Note that in the post above yours that far right number on the Z820's bar code label ends with -002 and the BIOS picture shows that it is a version 1 Z820 motherboard.  To get a version 2 Z820 motherboard that far right number needs to end with -003.

In contrast, if the motherboard is from a Z420 or Z620 if that number ends with -001 it will be a version 1 motherboard.  If it ends with either -002 or -003 it will be a version 2 motherboard.  Why HP did that I have no idea, but other than booting into BIOS this is the best way to go.

Earlier comments were regarding z620 motherboards supporting Xeon E5-16XX/26XX v2 processors.

The part numbers /designations on the motherboard of the office z620 (E5-1680 v2) are:

708614-001 / AS# 618264-002 / SP#708614-601 W8PRO

A Version 1 z620 motherboard is:

619559-001, 618264-001 and will not list 708614-001

As far as I know, if the motherboard number starts 708 it is V2, if the only designation begins 618 or 619 it is V1.

V2 z620 motherboards are often listed with both 708614-001 plus  the V1 designation, for example, 619559-001 /-501 / -601  as the V2 motherboard is in effect, the V1 replacement part number. The  708614-001 is a direct replacement for a V1 and a V2 will support first version Xeon E5's. This is the reason I use the 708614 to designate V2.

Or is the maximum 1600MHz?
