HP Z820 Workstation

Hi,

We have a HP Z820 Workstation that has started radomnly shutting down. When the shut down occurs we get 2 red flashes on the power LED but no beep code. Also we noticed there is a constant red led lit on the motherboard when this occurs.

Pulling the power for a few mins and reconnecting gets the system going again.

I couldnt find anything relating to 2 red flashed and no beep code in the manual, anyone any idea's what the problem could be, PSU perhaps?

Thanks

the 2 red flashes usually indicate a thermal issue has forced a shutdown

i would check the cpu temps using the bios monitor or a windows based software monitor

next i would check the power supply (read the service manual for how to do this)

and then the case fans, and also any obstruction to airflow

See page 149 in the Maintenance and Service Guide: http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c03424977-1.pdf

Red Power LED blinking two times seems to be the CPU thermal protection that kicks in. More details and how to fix in the Maintenance and Service Guide abowe.

Thanks everyone, I did check the manual and the CPU Thermal protection error codes states there should also be beep codes, we are only getting the LED flash without the beeping so I wasnt sure if it was the same thing

Start by changng the thermal paste on the CPU (most likely it is dried and crumbly) and make sure the cooler is firmly seated.
