HP Z440 Workstation

Hi, The fans on my HP z440 are running high and loud.

I set them to minimum in bios but they still end up running high.

My z440 configuration.

Xeon 1660v4

64gb ( 4 x 16gb ) 2133p HP memory

Intel 670p 2tb Nvme SSD

NO other hard drives installed

Open Side panel on case to let in cool air

CPU fan and rear case fan installed. Front case fan was removed.

NO Memory fan installed

CPU has NEW Thermal paste applied

700watt Power supply original HP

Nvidia GT 730 graphics card powered by PCIe slot

No other PCI cards installed

All HP and Microsoft updates, Firmware, Bios update, and patches installed

Microsoft Win-10 Pro

CPU Idles at 0-3%

Memory usage is 8gb in use 56gb available

SSD activity is minimum

Run fine it just the fans run high after about 5 minutes of use.

Okay, I isolated the problem.

I had an LSI HBA adapter installed that was causing the fans to spin up high.

Not sure why?

Is this adapter not compatible with the z440 ?

I have z440 raid turned off and have the bios raid controller set to IDE

Okay, I removed the LSI HBA card

Reinstalled all the HP drivers

Made sure everything was working correctly and it was

The z440 run good and the fans did not spin up high.

I then reinstalled the LSI HBA and the fans ran okay for about 5 minutes then spin up a little but not as high as before.

I have the fan settings in z440 bios all the way down to the lowest speed.

I also noticed that now the computer will not sleep unless I select the power option and force it to enter sleep mode.

The cooling logic on HP workstations can detect presence or absence of a front cooling fan. In certain configurations of hardware that logic will boost the overall fan speeds above what you'd see if you had a front case cooling fan installed. There are official Delta and official Nidec ones. The Nicec ones use lower fan amperage and thus are quieter. I'd add one using the official front black plastic fan holder/PCIe card guide.

HP has stated specifically that its workstation cooling airflow was engineered to be most effective when the case side cover is in place. By keeping that off you may be hurting your cause rather than helping it.

In the past, at least, doing a clean install of your Windows OS with BIOS SATA emulation set to IDE rather than the HP/Intel recommended "RAID + AHCI" or "RAID" (which also got you RAID plus AHCI drivers installed) resulted in only IDE drivers being installed. It is my understanding that running with AHCI drivers provides better performance for modern drives be they SATAIII HDDs, 2.5" SATAIII SSDs, or M.2 NVMe SSDs. Not sure if that still applies to W10 and W11.

the reason the z440's fans ramped up is because the LSI 9211/9217 series card you installed is a HP supported option,

the HP 9217 card uses a 4 internal/4 external  configuration instead of your 9211 cards 4x4 internal connection other than the connection differences, the cards are mostly the same feature wise however the 9217 chip does run cooler than the earlier 9211

and this LSI card REQUIRES 200 LFM (Linear Feet per Minute ) OF AIRFLOW, to properly cool the chip on the card that sits under the black heatsink

if you have the room, adding a noctua 40mm PWM fan on top of the heatsink will keep the card within it's operational temperature and should allow the z440's case fans to stay at a lower speed

What about this card. ( LSI SAS 9300-8i ) I read good things about its performance but I don’t know if it is compatible with the z440 ?

I would put it in slot number 17 of this photo. Thats a PCIe3x16 slot.

the LSI 93xx series of cards is the current successor of the previous 92xx line and is a no frills HBA card when using "IT" firmware

since you appear to be targeting HBA only cards which are usually used for software raid you might want to broaden your search to include the Adaptec ASR-71605 (NOT the 71605E) these cards are more flexible than the LSI based cards in that they can do Raid/JBOD at the same time and are true passthrough which means that disks setup on the 71605 as non raid JBOD can be moved to any SATA controller if desired and work normally

both ASR/LSI controller cards require proper cooling and can have the 40mm noctua fan installed on their heatsinks  if not used in a server

here's one for 22.00 which includes the cache module and the super cap battery backup

Yes, I don’t want hardware raid. That’s why I am interested in HBA cards.

I don’t plan on using raid I just want fast I/O for the drives.

or I might mirror some drives together.

Which Card do you suggest ?

why are you asking what i would suggest when i HAVE suggested a alternative HBA capable card?

go read the LSI 9300 specs/whitepapers then do the same for the ASR card

after doing so if you have a specific question post,............and i'll try to answer it

your post that you don't want raid and then you say you do possibly want raid 0

and as for fast I/O on a sata port your limited by the sata spec/hardware and also the drives electronics

HP Recommended

Well first of all I need an HBA SAS card that is compatible with HP z449 computer that why I am asking.

I don’t want the Win-10 drivers to conflict with HP computer drivers.

And I don’t want it to Spin up the Fans on High.

I want it to run cool.

I ordered that ASR card you suggested and I will try it out.

I don’t have room for 16 drives. I can only fit 8 drives
