They have to be identical processors, not mismatched, for two to work together. I'll get you some added details shortly....

You seem to indicate that you've tried both and both will boot and work properly but with only one processor at a time. Just buy a second identical one.

Here's some data from intel for both:

X5570 1333 2 QPI 95W single sSpec code SLBF3 6.40 GT/s quadcore

E5645 1333 2 QPI 80W single sSpec code SLBWZ 5.86 GT/s hexacore

What that all means is that max memory/processor speed is 1333 MHz (assuming you have proper memory rated at least to 1333). The 2 QPI means that each can run two matching processors in your Z600. The single sSpec code (provided for each above) means there is only one released version. Some have two or rarely 3. In those cases you'd want matching sSpec codes. Those codes are an easy way to find what you want on eBay. Buy from a respected US seller, and it will be cheap to get a matching second one. Sounds like you already have a second heatsink/fan... the standard one for these workstations can handle up to and including 95W processors.

The GT/s is throughput... bigger is better. There also is the issue you want to truly know about, whether you have a v1 or a v2 motherboard. This is good to understand, and two links will help get you perspective. Go read my old posts in HERE and HERE . Since you can get into your BIOS the easiest is to just go find your boot block date and confirm it is from 2010 and not 2009.

There are faster 95W better official HP processors for the v2 workstations that have dual QPI links. You can read up on all that. I found google finds you better info from our forum vs the forum's search feature itself. Just search for something like HP Z600 processor upgrades and also HP Z600 QuickSpecs and find the latest one you can.

This might be the last one, also attached below. Take a look at page 3... I highlighted the two I'd recommend above all others, depending if you need/want raw clock speed or more cores (assuming you have a v2 motherboard):

I did post earlier today on another thread about very nice Z620v2 8GB memory sticks I proved could run in my souped up Z600v2 from years ago... those auto-downregulate to 1333 MHz in the Z600v2 but will run at 1886 MHz in a Z420v2/Z620v2 with 1866 rated processor.

Good luck on your project... I'm still running mine with a very fast boot SSD and a bit slower 512GB documents SSD. Nice combo even still, and I've proven I can upgrade a Z400 v2 to W11Pro64 so now plan to do the same with that Z600 for grins.
