New video card to Z420 (Base Model ) work station

Hello everyone,

I just got a used EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 to use on my Z420 workstation and I'm trying to figure out from previous posts if I can possibly power it up using a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter but unfortunately I couldn't find the answer.

This is the exact model of the GPU that I have: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 FTW GAMING ( https://www.evga.com/Products/Specs/GPU.aspx?pn=262A811F-D3E9-4E51-AF12-F808EC0A3B56 ) and it has two 8 pin sockets which got me confused as I couldn't find many posts related to GPUs with this configuration.

My workstation has only one G1 6 pin cable to connect to the GPU and I was wondering if it is possible to use the official HP 6 Pin Female PCIe to 8 Pin PCIe Male GPU Power Cable (N1G35AA) ( https://www.bargainhardware.co.uk/hp-n1g35aa-6-pin-female-to-8-pin-male-gpu-power-cable-4-in-460621-... ) to connect it and to have enough power to operate it. I've read in some other posts that with some GPUs connecting only one 8 pin socket could work with lower loads. The other solution that I have found is to use a generic 6 Pin Female PCIe to dual 8 Pin PCIe Male (splitter) cable but this solution is usually not suggested.

This is how my workstation looks like inside. I've also looked for a possible G2 cable with came with some older models but I couldn't find it.

Here are the workstation's specs:

• 600W PSU
• BIOS VERSION: J61 v03.96
• CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1620 @ 3.60GHz
• 64GB RAM
• Current GPU: Nvidia Quadro K4000
• 2 SSDs, 1 HDD and 1 NVME Drive (Adapter on Slot 4)

The reason for upgrading the GPU is video editing using premiere pro and after effects so please feel free to share any upgrade tips (possibly CPU) to improve the performance of my workstation.

So any tips, suggestions, ideas are welcome!

the HP adapter is the gold standard, and 3rd party ones can vary in quality which is why the no name ebay ones are not recommended. however name brand 3rd party ones are usually fine

the 1070 total wattage draw is within the same range as some of the cards hp offered, (see z420 quickspecs) so you should not have any issues power wise

Actually I'm confused because the official HP adapter is a single 6-pin to 8-pin cable which can be connected to only one of the two 8-pin sockets found on the 1070 and I'm not sure if that is enough to run the card without any problems.

That's is why I don't know which solution is the best:

1. The official HP 6-pin to 8-pin cable or

2. A 3rd party single female 6-pin to dual 8-pin cable ?

you do not have a 1070 (150 watts), you have a 1070 TI class card (180 watts)

Sorry but perhaps it's my bad knowledge of English or just lack of expertise on the subject...

I know that there is such an adapter and I've already looked for it and found it before making this post.

If I'm not mistaken though the cable you 've sent me is the wrong cable, maybe? The one you 've sent me is Dual 6-Pin Female to 8-Pin Male and the one I need is 6-Pin Female to dual 8-pin Male, right?

I know that there is such an adapter from 3rd party manufacturers and my question was if I can use that adapter without frying my GPU because I've read that bad quality adapter cables can cause these type of issues.
