Problem with MSI GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI 4GT OC on a HP Z420 : black screen, Workstation boots.

I know the cleanest solution is to change monitor, taking a DVI or HDMI or Display Port for example. But my VGA screen is in great shape, and I'm pretty conservative with my computer hardware.

I'll give it a try with an active HDMI to VGA adapter, I must have one at my job to test. And if it still doesn't work then yes I will change monitor.

My HP Z420 workstation will be used only to mount a VMware ESXi server for personal use, to avoid accumulating several computers at home.

I know that the converter can be a source of problem, see the proof !

The  cleanest solution is not to change the monitor, it's to use a DVI to DVI cable.

1.  The monitor intended for use is:

 HP s2331 Inputs:

1 DVI-D connector

1 VGA connector

2. The GPU connections are:

 GTX 1050 Ti Outputs:

1x DVI,

1x HDMI,

1x DisplayPort

3.  The HDMI specification for the GTX  1050Ti is  HDMI (Supports 3840 X 2160 @60Hz as specified in HDMI 2.0b)

4.  However, the maximum resolution of VGA is 640 X 480 in 16 colors

5.  There seems no chance that any HDMI to VGA adapter can work unless the display resolution is set to 640 X 480 in 16 colors.  Consider trying that with your current adapter. But 640 X 480 would be wasting the full capabilities of the monitor. The HP s2331 has a DVI-D connection, meaning that monitor is capable of a maximum 1920 X 1200 and a few million colors.

When the only common connection of the subject GPU and monitor is DVI, use that.  A direct connection without signal conversion is ideal. DVI to DVI  will work on the HP w2216v also.

Hi @BambiBoomZ,

So I can confirm that with an active HDMI to VGA adapter I don't have a black screen from the initial display of the bios, and that with my VGA display I can work normally on my Z420 ! I am installing VMware vSphere Hypervisor 7.0 (ESXi).

again note the, first post i made which said the original posters issue was due to a incompatible hardware combination and changing one of the parts would resolve the video issue he was having while this poster had a curiosity in determining what was the cause,...................he should have tried swapping one of the parts as the first step in determining where the problem resided instead of doing it as a last step.

BambiBoom was also spot on with his recommendation of  simply changing the video input/cable like i recommended however unlike me he detailed why this could resolve the display issue

I don't want to fight over who came up with the best answer between you two. I just felt that my last answer indicating the use of an active HDMI to VGA adapter allowed me to keep my old VGA display.

Indeed it was the replacement of said adapter that got me out of it. But I also repeat that this adapter worked perfectly on the same graphics card mounted on another Core i7-880 based configuration.

So I thank you both for your additional answers.

@DGroves, participation in a self-help forum is also a team effort, not a competition to collect the most tickets solved by oneself. Each answer completes the puzzle a little bit more.

@DGroves, I have also tried to locate the problem by mounting the card, the adapter and the same display on another computer, and it worked perfectly. This problem only occurred with the Z420 (Xeon E5-2680 v2), hence my post. Helping others on a forum is quite a job it seems !
