HP Z840
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everyone!

First post over here. 😊

I like to purchase a refurbished HP Z840 workstation to replace my current Mac Pro.

Is it possible to install 2 SSD drives in the external optical bays in front of the tower without installing any adapters?

Thank you very much for your answers and precious time!

Ivan

the z800/z820/840 all share the same basic case design and since almost all drives are nowadays either 3.5 or M.2 you will need adapters to mount either of them in a 5.25 bay or a PCI-E slot

these adapters do not cost that much, and are available from newegg/amazon/ebay to name a few sellers

what you want is either a 3.5/to 5.25 adapter or a PCI-E x4 M.2 card

Hi DGroves,

Thank you very much for your answer.

I wasn't sure if could mount them directly into the front bay of the Z840 without any adapters. Now I know! 😀

Have a nice day!

no problem,... but a quick update, most consumer sata ssd's are 2.5in not 3.5 like mech drives as such for a SSD you will need a 2.5 to 5.25 adapter

Thanks!

I will put in two Samsung Enterprise 960GB SATA 6Gb/s PM863a SSD's.

a quick FYI i use the PM953 (previous model) and it is not compatible with the samsung consumer driver or samsung magician software

if you install the samsung ssd driver i suspect you will have the same issue i had, windows will no longer boot stay with the windows default ssd driver
