Z420
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So I was looking around and found out many people have a TPM chip in their z420 but I cannot find mine, I checked the bios and everything is still nothing. I don't know if its discrete or not

Hi:

There is a setting in the BIOS in the security menu that indicates an embedded security device is available or hidden.

The default setting is hidden.

If the device is hidden, change the setting to available and the TPM device should show up.

See chapter 2 of the service manual, page 45 under the device security section.

Device Security    Makes the following devices available or hidden to the computer:
● Embedded Security Device (hidden by default)

If you are wanting to know this information in order to upgrade to W11, the PC does not meet Microsoft's hardware requirements.

If you are interested in installing W11 on your PC as is, you can read this discussion for how I upgraded several HP and Dell notebook and desktop PC's that did not meet the W11 hardware requirements to W11 22H2.

If the in-place upgrade fails, you should be able to clean install W11 using the bootable W11 installation flash drive you made with Rufus.

I found and the tpm 1.2 is now on, i have a question if i update my tpm to 2.0 through device manager will it break my computer.

HP Recommended

Even if you upgrade the TPM 1.2 device to v2.0, your PC still won't meet the W11 hardware requirements because of the processor.

Please see this discussion.  I highly recommend that you do not try upgrading it since HP does not support such an upgrade.

how to update IFX TPM 1.2 to TPM 2.0 on HP Z420 Workstation - HP Support Community - 7255607

Its not for windows 11 its for a program that needs 2.0 tpm

Since HP did not release a firmware update to upgrade the TPM 1.2 security chip to 2.0, I would have to say that you are out of luck unless you are willing to take the risk of permanently wrecking your PC as was indicated in that discussion I posted.

this is my last question i have an extra z420 that i do not need  it, if i enable the TPM on it and take the risk.

If it worked would i be able to update it on my main without any problems

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to answer your question.

I have never attempted to upgrade a TPM security chip.

I recommend that you start a new topic on that subject.
