Z820
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So I was upgrading my system with an PCIE to M2 card and decided to place it in slot 1 x8 (4). Card ran fine and fans ran as normal. Wanted to see if it would work fine in slot 4  x16. It worked however the fans didn't stop spinning at max rpm. I tried removing the card and it was still the same. Tried reseating the graphics cards, no luck. Of course everytime I would install the card or replace it, I had the system off.

Decided to update the BIOS

Old: 3.16

New: 3.94

No luck, now I'm getting a message when starting the computer "thermal sensor not programmed". Tried the recommended fix of unplugging the AC power and cycling the power. When that didn't work I decided maybe updating the ME firmware might help.

Old: 8.1.31.1351

New: 8.1.72.3002

The system fully boots it's just the fans never idle and the bios message prevents smooth reboots. Any ideas are welcomed.

System config:

Z820

E5-2670 x 2

128 ECC Ram

try removing all cards but the video, and sec spu (if installed) all memory except for the first stick, now do a full cmos reset by power off, remove power cord , press pwr button 10 sec, then remove cmos battery, now press cmos reset 5 sec.

power on, confirm cmos reset (time will/date will be off)

power off replace cmos battery, power on set cmos settings do you still have the error?

if so pay to contact HP support,  they might be able to help or motherboard replacement is required or try the items i listed below

there is one other part that affects the fans running at max speed and that is the ambient temp sensor which is located in the power on cable/button.  this cable has a small transistor embedded in the cable that which contains the power on button.  if the transistor goes bad, the case/memory fans will ramp up to ful speed (cpu fans will remain fine)

offical solution is to replace the cable, which requires removal of the right side panel/left removable panel and front face plate. unoffical solution is to take existing cable, locate transistor, peal open covering and replace NPN2222a transistor

making sure you attach new transistor the same way as existing one

last solution is to use two 52 ohm 5 watt PWM (4 pin) fan speed reducers on the 2 front fans,  and one each 52 ohm 5 watt resistors on rear case fan and the memory fans (the memory/rear fans will rquire you to cut the 12v line and insert the resistor)

the error msg will still be there, but the fans will run at close to proper speeds

This is a weird problem because it acted somewhat normal for about 5 seconds. Then the fans spun back up but it didn't seem that loud, maybe 50%. But honestly I think I'm getting use to the sound. Went into bios and reconfigured the time. Booted all the way into windows and shut the computer down. Replaced all the ram and that thermal sensor message is back. Not sure if it just took it more then 1 restart or what.

Guess I will just have to play with this computer more and maybe just start replacing parts till I replace the whole board.

Thank you for your time and help.

ram modules can also cause this issue if ram is installed wrong (IE- smaller modules before larger) or wrong rank modules (read ram labels it will say 1 2 or 4 rank)  all ram in a bank must be the same size/rank

try installing just 2 banks of ram, one bank for each CPU
