Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

When the USB3.0 setting in BIOS is Disabled (i.e., BIOS support for USB 3.0 in the Advanced settings tab), the Device Manager shows an unknown device, but everything seems to work.  When the USB3.0 setting in BIOS is Enabled, the correct driver is loaded and the unknown device (USB 3.0 hub?) goes away, but then a USB flash drive or DVD drive plugged into the USB ports isn't recognized at all.  It simply isn't there.  I've looked in Manage (Computer), Device Manager (by type and by connection), and tried plugging it in and unplugging it to see if anything changes.  The keyboard and mouse work fine either way.

usually the best method is to simply reinstall windows and any needed drivers

trying to isolate which part of windows is corrupted can be very time consuming and still not produce a solution which is why a reinstall is recommended

Hi, thanks for responding.  This is a clean install on a wiped SSD, so I don't think that's the issue.  The only thing I've installed is Firefox so I can download drivers and updates.  The drivers are from HP's support site.

I pulled the drivers from the Intel site.  I already had the file and pretty sure I installed them, but re-installing seemed to fix the problem.  The unknown device disappeared from the Device Manager list.

Thanks
