Been using a HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF as a gaming server. Upgraded the RAM and using an SSD.
For a CPU it has an Intel Core i5-6600
Recently was interested in improving the CPU performance, wondering if anyone has any opinions.
This related upgrade post is very relevant, seems like replacing the CPU cooler is a good idea. Probably also a good idea to ugprade the PSU.
Since the socket is LGA 1151, that limits us to a few options. Looks like the top option would be "i9-9900K", but that is also around $385 on amazon. i7-9700K is next, which is cheaper at $239
So basically, I think my steps are:
- Choose one of these CPUs
- Replace cooler
- Replace PSU

Other than the processor fitting in the socket, that it the least important reason why a processor will work or not.
The chipset has to support a better processor as does the BIOS.
The 800 G3 model series has the Intel Q270 chipset.
When you look up the Intel chipset specs on the Intel website, there is a compatible products tab which lists all of the processors supported by the chipset. You will not find anything newer than an Intel 7th gen core processor.

The best processor you can install in your PC would be an i7-7700K.
The list of supported processors begins on page 7 of the HP Quickspecs at the link below.

No Intel 8th or 8th gen core processors are supported in the model series.

Those newer CPUs came with new chipset requirements even though they used the same socket. The 200 series chipset in this machine supports 6th and 7th gen Intel CPUs. 8th gen CPUs came with a new chipset, the 300 series.
