Dear Forum,

Upgrade update:

Got a Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2TB SSD for an outstanding deal.  It replaced the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB primary drive.

Even though the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF has a PCIe 3.0 gen interface, drive performance increased notably from 339% to 405% as per UserBenchMark:

Dear Forum,

Since one of the four HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF's SATA inputs was still available: "SATA0" -the dark blue SATA connector labeled "Primary hard drive", I decided to return the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD to this gaming rig.

To that end, in order to utilize the best possible write/write speeds, I used an M.2 NVMe to PCIe 3.0 x4 adapter card with added copper heat sink fitted in the open PCIe x16 (downshifted to x4) motherboard slot ("system board label: X4PCIEXP"):

The results exceeded my expectations:

Dear Forum,

One more upgrade: swapping the standard internal OEM HP 180 watt power supply (p/n: 901763-001) with an OEM HP 250 watt PSU (p/n: 901760-004).

As the picture shows, the 250 watt "P2" power connector format/color coding is exactly the same as the 180 watt "P2" power connector.  Purchased it very cheaply via eBay.

Given the fact that my upgraded HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF is supplying power to a number of added/upgraded internal computer components (one Intel i7-7700K processor, two NVMe M.2 SSDs, one SATA HHD, one SATA SSD, three added cooling fans, 4 x 8GB 2400 MHz RAM sticks and the occupied PCIe x16 slot connected to an RTX 3080 OC 12GB graphics card), whatever additional internal PSU wattage increase I could add would be helpful.

Will report back how it went.

Dear Forum,

Outstanding: installed, and the 250 watt internal power supply (p/n: 901760-004) upgrade is working flawlessly:

The 250 watt power supply has the exact same dimensions as the original 180 watt power supply: 164mm x 94mm x 73mm (LxHxW).

The entire HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF now has a combined synced power supply totaling 1,100 watt: an external AresGame AGK850 watt + the OEM HP 250 watt internal power supply.

Kind Regards,

@NonSequitur777 an amazing thread!

I have a slightly different question... I have a GPU (1050 Ti) that does not have a separate power socket (it is powered from the motherboard itself). I use the GPU for Photoshop and mainly for 10-bit colour depth, so don't need anything ultra-powerful.

My question is - do I still require the PCIe external dock/extension? Reason I am asking is that some listings from the 24-pin to 4-pjn adapters (e.g. this one and this one) suggest that all that is needed for increased power to the motherboard is the external power supply and an adapter card

Is that correct? And if not, I presume that as your reply to NOT_Merlin, a powered extension will not work?

@James10000,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

If I understand your question correctly, you have an HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF with the original (180 watt) power supply fitted with a low-profile GTX 1050 Ti powered through your PCIe x16 slot?

In this scenario, the best you can do is to replace the 180 watt power supply with the (only) more powerful compatible (250 watt) OEM HP power supply, p/n: 901760-004.

The point is that an ATX 24-pin to 15-pin SATA power adapter card cannot directly power a motherboard, but only peripherals, specifically a graphics card. There are other power conversion methods available for select PC models, such as this example: https://www.amazon.com/COMeap-Power-Adapter-Workstation-12-inch/dp/B06XW7RWNH/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_produc..., which would indeed replace the original power supply altogether, but I don't think this power adapter cable would be compatible with the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 platforms.

Anyway, since it appears you're from the UK, you can purchase one of these 250 watt power supplies from a UK Seller for less than £40: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165055957875?epid=15045723185&hash=item266e1a0b73%3Ag%3AxUAAAOSwIbVhNeC2&....

Hope this was helpful.

Hi,

Did you have to re-flash the bios on the new MB?

@georges45678,

Yes, not surprisingly, the replacement motherboard had an obsolete BIOS version, so had to start from scratch, so to speak.

Kind Regards,
