HP Z840 Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey guys,

I have an old HP Z840 that I want to take the LSI SAS2308 out of because it is no longer supported and it's giving me all sort of trouble, but when I opened the case I didn't see it, is this on board, therefore cannot be removed?

Thanks

yes the LSI "ROC" Raid On Chip is mounted on the motherboard

the LSI can either have only it's bios disabled or the entire device disabled within the z840's bios

just what issues do you think the LSI is causing? it's a defacto  standard chip/driver that is well understood, and certified by hundreds of software makers and computer makers  and is still supported by all the current OS's windows/linux/Unix

Well, it did not let me update Windows 10 to a newer build, the newest I could get was 1909, anything newer than that blue screened, I narrowed it down to the LSI SAS2308 when I installed Samsung Magician to the computer to see how the Samsung SSD connected to it was doing, but it never saw it, then I tried to install ESXi to the Z840 and the same thing happened, ESXi did not see the LSI SAS2308, only CentOS and Ubuntu Linux were able to see it, so that's the reason why I wanted to take it out, but if it is on board there is nothing I can do about that.

you have a corrupted windows install

either use the local disk based windows recovery to reinstall windows

or download the latest USB key recovery client from HP Cloud recovery

You think I didnt think of that, i did that, but when I tried to update Windows it blue screened, the Windows from Cloud recovery is build 1809, that one works fine, the highest you xan go is up to build 1909.

Also, please don't ask me to do diagnostics, I already spent way too much time with HP and Microsoft trying to find out what the problem is but since Windows 10 1909 and the LSI SAS2308 both reached EOL they are not supported, so there is no help coming from any of them.

most users with z840 systems (including me) have not had any issues/problems updating or doing a clean windows install using the newer builds you seem to be the exception but since you don't want to troubleshoot or do a clean install of windows, your on your own
