XTU Version required for overclocking Z420 on Win 10?

further to the general discussion, the only version working for me is 5.2.0.14, I have to install/uninstall a few times (with registry cleans in-between) to get this to work, my system is a Z420 with an E5-1650v2 running at 4.5-4.1Ghz (TDP limiting) with 8x16GB PC3-14900R

I never exceed 70c with the OEM liquid cooler,

XTU in general is a bit iffy, none of the newer versions work at all for me. Happy overclocking!

Thanks for your reply. I posted over in the Intel forums but received no help.

XTU 5.2x is built for Windows 7 I believe, but I may be wrong. Thought I tried that version and it didn't work.

I can try installing it again, don't think I tried it on this system. My Z420 is on Win 10 Pro v2004.

Balthxzar is your computer running Win 7 or Win 10? What's the build number? 

I had a 1650 v2 in it before, just upgraded to a 2687w v2, I am also using the liquid cooler.

With the 1650 v2, XTU wasn't working either.

I'm on w10 build 1903, build 18362.900

The E5-2687w won't work either way, it has a locked multiplier, only the 16xx from 1650 upwards have unlocked multipliers (V1, V2, V3) 

I had to run ccleaner several times cleaning the registry, and uninstall and reinstall a few times (run ccleaner everytime you uninstall or install, restart between every action.)

Hi Balthxzar,

Are you able to adjust the Multipliers for ALL 6 cores on your E5-1650 v2 CPU in XTU?

As you can see from the above image, it is only possible to increase the multipliers setting for 6 of the E5-1680 v2 cores, not all 8 cores.

When I run the Pime95 torture test, with XTU running at 4.7GHz;

After starting the Prime95 torture test, I reset the min/max values in HWMonitor which shows on 3.4GHz when running all cores at 100%.

Hi Brian, I can adjust ALL 6 cores of my E5-1650v2, with some tweaking I'm stable at 4.3-4.4Ghz with ALL  cores loaded 100%,

from what I can vaguely remember, it was a problem with XTU that it couldn't handle more than 6 cores, I can't remember where I saw that but I definitely remember it, take that as you will. 
but just to reiterate I can overclock ALL cores.

Sometimes it can take a few hours before the images are approved, check back later. I'll look into that possible XTU limitation.

Wow I'm extremely jealous of you guys able to overclock your v2 CPUs.

I know Balthxzar is on Win 10 1903. I'm on Win 10 2004.

When upgrading from the e5-1650 v2, I was looking for a CPU with 8 cores that had a stock boost clock of at least 4 ghz.

Worried that I wouldn't be able to overclock the 1680 v2, I purchased the e5-2687 v2 as it appeared to be the most powerful stock 8-core CPU out of the E5 v2 line.

I know Brian is on Windows 7, so he is having less compatibility issues with the software., which might be why he's having no problem overclocking his 8 core Xeon processor.

If someone has an e5-1680 v2 laying around, and are willing to try overclocking it on a Z420 with Win 10 v1909 & up, this would be greatly appreciated. The only other CPU I have for this system is the same one as Balthxzar (e5-1650 v2), and I don't feel like cracking the system open, replacing the CPU, and re pasting just to have less cores.

If an e5-1680 v2 can be overclocked on Win 10 1909 and above, I'd definitely consider buying one.

Hi, I had XTU working on windows 1809 and 1903, I can't confirm anything above however.

My E5-1650v2 runs at about 4.4-4.3Ghz all cores, and gives a cpumark of about 15995 and 2491, it would be interesting to compare this to an E5-1680v2 noting the XTU issue of not being able to control more than 6 cores, if Brian is still around maybe he could try it?

I suspect one of the 150w E5-2687w v2 could do fairly well against that as the TDP is the major limiting factor with the E5-1650 v2

I'm waiting for the 2004 build to roll out to my machine and will update if/when it does,

Here's my latest Passmark scores, (CPU score 17461, single threaded score 2551):-

Note that there is a huge increase in single threaded performance when increasing the turbo boost from 3.9GHz to 4.2GHz, (a modest 300Mhz turbo increase = roughly a 400 jump in single threaded score). However, increasing from 4.2GHz to 4.7GHz only yielded an additional increase of 250 for the single threaded score. It is also interesting to see how the CPU's single threaded performance also improves the score/performance of the other system components, e.g. graphics, memory and disk.

I haven't been able to find information regarding the core limit in XTU as yet, but I'm still looking. I found loads of other posts on other forums showing the E5-1680 v2 CPU being overclocked on all cores, but unfortunately they were overclocking in the BIOS, (which these workstations don't support). So at least I know it is not a CPU limitation preventing the all core overclock.

Based on the fact that you are able to all-core overclock on the E5-1650 v2 CPU, it would be interesting to compare it with an E5-1660 v2 CPU. Still 6-cores, but higher clocks and 25% more onboard CPU cache.
