HP Z840 Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

does anybody know what is the difference between the Z840 motherboard PCB v1.00 and v1.01?

I’m asking because right now I have a v1.01 which is defective and ordered one that is v1.00.

Thanks.

@Airborne9521 -- if you place the two motherboards "side-by-side", do you see any differences?

Otherwise, it is only the HP engineers who made the engineering changes to produce the "1.01" board who can explain/justify their work.

the board revision minor number can also be changed if a part used is no longer available and a different compatible part is used , or intel may start shipping a "revised" chipset which the board uses, this also will trigger a board rev number change

Major board rev numbers are usually changed when something like changing/re-routing  the traces on the motherboard

or a newer chipset supports newer processors, for these major changes HP will almost always publish what the major changes were

because these workstations can be used by companies with mission critical work, any/all changes must be documented and recertified internally by HP, or else those companies may have grounds to complain HP is not obligated to tell the end user what minor changes were made only that the new board rev performs the same as the pervious board

bottom line, don't lose any sleep over your 1.01 rev vs 1.0

Hi,

thanks for the response, I was just worried that by installing a motherboard of lower revision might cause incompatibility with my OS already installed with all my applications.

I would not worry, because most software is designed and tested on a very-wide collection of computers.

It would be an extremely rare program that has specifications that demand a specific processor (at a specific "stepping-level")  & a specific motherboard (at a specific hardware level) & BIOS firmware (at a specific level).  An example would be a "mission-critical" computer put into one of NASA's Space Shuttles.

Short answer: do not worry about it.

One thing I do wonder, the revision 1.01 could have its TPM  upgraded from 1.2 to 2.0. I guess the revision 1.00 will allow that also.

you obviously are not reading the replies, because if you were you would not be asking if the TPM was the same between board revisions
