hp z400

hi there, i'm here again with a new important question. can my hp z400 workwith a intel xeon x5680 cpu?
it's a six-core cpu  3.3 ghz. where i can found a cpu compatibility list?

I haven't spent ages looking for these so there possibly may be a more up-to-date version of the HP Z400 quickspecs.

Is your Z400 a version 1 or a version 2?  You can look up the boot block date for v1 versus v2 here in the forum, but the easiest way is to just look inside.... .the v1 has 4 memory sockets versus the v2 has 6.

 

Once you tell us that then we can be more specific in our answers..... right now the answer is no, or maybe... I'll explain that after you get back to us.

Great.  Then it will..... If you have one of those processors handy I'd try it.  I've been using the X5690 in our v2 Z400s.  The official Z400 processors for the v2 are listed in the later QuickSpecs for that, and the last one is version 58 which you can download from  HERE:

The fastest of those official ones are the W3580 and the W3690 which can run at 3.33 and 3.46 GHz respectively, and can run 1333MHz memory at its full speed.  The v2 Z400 can run ECC unbuffered memory.  The v2 Z600 can run ECC unbuffered and ECC buffered memory.

 

It turns out that the v2 Z400 can run X5690, X5680, and X5672 (all ones I've tried).  I had that spare X5672 from a Z600 to do a test whether using a Z600's processor would allow the Z400 to also run ECC buffered memory.... it did not.

 

The X56XX processors listed above all have a second QPI link, but you don't have to use that second one for the processor to work by itself.  The ones with dual QPI links can work with a second processor as well as solo.  Here are the 3 sSpec codes of those 3 so you can easily search eBay to get an idea on costs:

 

SLBVX (hexacore) X5690 130W

SLBV5 (hexacore) X5680 130W

SLBYK (quad core) X5672 95W

 

I believe the 95W X5675 hexacore (officially for the Z600) would also work, but never got around to testing that.

 

Most of the v1 and v2 Z400s were sold with the larger Performance heatsink/fan which has the ground jumper wire from pin 1 to pin 5 on the plug end, and those will easily handle the 130W processors above.  As a result you generally would just have to swap in the processor assuming you have the Performance heatsink/fan in your v2 Z400.  This one I'm typing on has run rock solid for a number of years now with the X5690 in place.
