Mahmann is correct. I checked my Z420 version 2 power supply this morning.... it only has one PCIe supplemental 6-wire cable, and yet on its label it states V12 G1-18A and V12 G2-18A..... but G2 does not exist. It does exist in the video DGroves provides a link to. My Z420 v2 came straight from HP. The 18A refers to the current those cables can provide, each, and the voltage is +12.

Then, looking through a bunch of pictures from eBay and google search for 600W Z420 power supply you'll see the majority of them have only one PCIe supplemental power cable, but a few have two. The 600 W ones all have the same SP and AS part numbers regardless of whether they have one or two PCIe supplemental power cables. The most expensive 600W one on eBay right now has two, the rest have 1. For our work cards we don't even need one.... we use Quadro cards that do not run above 75W... two in each box.

There is a generation notation on the label.... the one on eBay with two is gen 4. Maybe gen 1-4 had two and gen 5-6 have 1.

The power plug (exhaust) end of the 600W ones all have vertical venting slots in the metal of the power supply, exposed outside of the case. For the 400W ones (which have zero PCIe supplemental power cables) the venting at the power plug exhaust end is a honeycomb pattern... so you can tell them apart by looking at the rear of the case.

For all who don't know..... the ATX standard is 75W max per PCIe supplemental power cable.... note that HP has engineered for much higher than that. Power = I x V...... watts = 18 x 12...... much more than 75. Each of the two PCIe x16 slots provides 75W max up to the card from the slot alone.

i plan on asking our HP rep about this change,....workstations are tested with specific configurations and like servers have a replace with SAME policy, and any changes to the hardware (or software) have to be certified again with the ISV's and the changes noted. I would think removing the aux GPU cable from the supply would apply as a hardware change that should have been documented

Yep. Im having issues with this right now. Bought a v2 z420 and now don't have enough connectors for my gtx1080 that I bought expecting (rightfully) that it will have 2 6pin cables available to power my you. Yet it doesn't, and now I have to wait until Tuesday, spending $10 on another adapter, after two hours of wondering what's wrong with my eyes when all I wanted to do is play some video games.
