Product Name: HP Officejet Pro X476dn MFP
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

We have in our company 50 HP Officejet Pro X476dn MFP (model number: CN460A) that suddenly stopped loading secure pages in their embedded web server (EWS). This was first noticed on Friday, July 24th. The printers are in offices in their own LAN that all connect back to our corporate office via VPN.

I have done my best to search for other examples of this problem. Included in this description are links to other forum posts with similar issues that I have used in troubleshooting.

While navigating the web page of the printer by going to the IP (ex: 10.10.10.10) the web page loads without issue. It is only when going to a page that requires a secure connection that the problem happens. For example when going to configure "Scan to network folder" a pop up states "Redirecting to Secure Page" I select "okay" and the page tries to load, but eventually times out. This occurs when going to the printer IP by including https (ex: https://10.10.10.10).The error message states the following in each of the web browsers used:

  • Chrome: "This web page is not available" ERR_COnnection_Timed_Out
  • Firefox: "The Connection has timed out"
  • Internet Explorer: "This page can't be displayed"
  • Opera: "This webpage is not available."

Reloading the web page does not load the page.

Information about the affected printers:

  • Various ages from >1 year to brand new out of box.
  • Various firmware (LNP1CN1336MR, LNP1CN1409BR, LNP1CN1432ER, LNP1CN1502AR, LNP1CN1502BR, LNP1CN1432DR).
  • When troubleshooting issue printer has been restarted; removed from power after power down; hard reboot by disconnecting power while powered on.
  • Printers have statically assigned IP. This has been changed to automatic with a firewall acting as DHCP server.
  • DNS has been both manually configured and set to automatic. DNS has been our domain controller and google (8.8.8.8 or 4.4.4.4).

Information from various computers attempting to load HTTPS pages:

  • Will not load in: Mozilla Firefox (v 40.0.3 or 39.0), Google Chrome (v 44.0), Internet Explorer (v. 11.0), Opera (v 31.0).
  • Will not load in private browsing/incognito browsing.
  • Deleted all cookies, cached web pages, history, saved security certificates, and did not resolve issue.
  • Restoring & uninstall/reinstall Mozilla Firefox did not resolve the issue.

Special situations where the problem still arose:

  • Shutting down windows firewall from machine trying to connect.
  • Disabling all URL filtering from local network & remote network.
  • Connecting within local network of a remote printer using remote desktop software.
  • Connecting from computer after first power on before joining to the domain. [This removes windows updates/group policy/domain settings as source of problem.]
  • Running HP Print and scan doctor from computer in local network of printer finds no problems.
  • Performing a firmware update. (This post &  this post)

The following has occurred since first encountering problem, with no resolution:

  • Firewall that controls all VPN tunnels has been power cycled.
  • Firewall of in remote office with printer has been power cycled.
  • Domain controller has been power cycled.

The following has been done at the suggestion of an HP support technician and the results:

  • Directly connecting a computer to the printer via an ethernet cable (no switch, no wall plate, etc.). HTTPS page loads.
  • Directly connecting & changing the advanced network setting of "HTTPS Redirection" to "Do not Redirect to HTTPS" & applying the change. When placing printer back on network HTTPS pages still won’t load (and get notification that it is still redirecting to HTTPS).
  • Downgrading firmware from v LNP1CN1502BR to LNP1CN1432DR.

The following situations has allowed TEMPORARY access to HTTPS pages in the web server:

  • Hard power cycle of the printer where power is discharged from a power off printer and powering back on. This allowed access for <5 minutes, and only worked for one printer.
  • Directly connecting to printer with computer in the LAN.
  • Somehow one printer managed to obtain a security certificate from HP while in Firefox. This allowed longer access to HTTPS pages. I could not replicate the settings for other printers. The security certificate was exported for saving. The printer eventually stopped loading HTTPS pages. Importing this certificate did not restore pages. Clearing saved information on computer (cache, history, stored security settings, etc.) and importing the certificate did not restore access.

I hope this is not too much information, but as you can see I have tried a great number of settings and troubleshooting steps. I need to get this resolved and the HP support engineer working with me on this has deemed the issue to be within our network and will provide no further assistance. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
