Product Name: HP 2311x monitor
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

I bought a desktop computer a few years back, nough to said the one or two year warranty has already expired.  Earlier this year I started having problems with the monitor blacking out on me inconsistently.  At first I thought it was some virus that my kids or I had inadvertently downloaded.  It was until recently that I realized otherwise.  Although the inconsistent blackouts was annoying, I found ways of getting around it.  I realized that if I kept a window open on screen that it would not black out but it had to be some sort of application window, menu windows did not stop the intermittent blackouts.

The other problem that I encountered was more recent, within the last week; it was an "OSD lockout" error message.  The problem that this is cause was that the screen was darken and as the message stated it locked out the buttons on the monitor which would have been used to make adjustment to the display including brightness.  It may not seem like a big deal until you find yourself straining your eyes constantly because the monitor is too dark and realize that longtime use would not be healthy for my eyes, especially since I already wear prescription glasses.  It started unexpectantly right after my kids were on the computer and I at first blame them for somehow breaking the monitor but later came to a different conclusion.  After discovering the problem I went to the internet to find a solution and also tried HP support but since it was out of warranty they were no help unless I pony up some money to fix the problem.  I discovered from several sources on the internet that this is a common problem but somehow it does seem to be listed on HP website or this site in particular; I wonder why?

I found several fixes for the OSD lockout problem but none for the flickering blackouts.  The first fix for the OSD message was a simple power button 30 second reset which instructed me to first unplug the monitor power cord and then hold in the power button on the monitor for at least 30 seconds.  That didn't work and neither did the others.  One fix that seem to be promising is one that I find more drastic than the others but which I hesitant about and waiting until a little while to see if I can find a better solution before I try it.  This solution requires me to open the casing to the monitor next to the control buttons and disconnect one of the wired plugs to the buttons that controls the adjustments.  Before I take that step I decided to just replace the 23" HP monitor with an older Sharp monitor from one of my other computers that I was using at the time; lucky for me I didn't throw it away.  Replacing the monitor fixed both problems right away; no more flickering blackouts or unable to adjust the brightness problems.  The only problem I have with this monitor right now is that the power button is missing but I can live with that.

My HP monitor was a lot better when it was working correctly that this replacement that I am using now but if I don't received any support from HP on how to fix this problem I will not be buying another HP computer and definitely not another HP monitor in the future.  My wife is talking about buying me a new computer for my birthday later this month so I will definitely be bringing up the issue with her so that we will buy something other HP or Compaq if that is in any way related to HP.  If HP have a problem with its monitors it should let it customers know instead of being mums about it and no I will not pay for something that I believe is a manufacturer defect.

Does anyone out there know of a workable fix to both or either of these problems.  I would really appreciate any incite to a solution.  Thanks.
