T830

We have a HP DesignJet T830 wide format printer. When we put in a 36" roll, the printer reads it as 35.8" or 35.9" (913mm instead of 914mm) and therefore rotates the drawings. This has happened on two different T830 plotters... What's going on here? Someone asked this back in 2018 and it was closed as unresolved...

Wide format plotter recognizing 36" paper as 35.8" - HP Support Community - 6513403

5 years and no solution?

Is this a new problem or has it always done this with the 36" rolls?

You might try a different roll of paper.

I don't work for HP....I just repair their printers.

Have you measured the actual roll yourself? Could be a quality issue with paper ssupplier.

Thanks for replying... it's a new plotter (just installed yesterday), with a fresh roll of paper and we don't have another roll to try. I'll ask my friend who has the same plotter (and the same issue) if they get the mismeasurement on every roll or hit and miss depending on the roll. They have been using workarounds like turning off auto rotate, etc. so they will have to check.

You are probably correct that it is that the width of the paper roll itself that is actually undersized (HP "Genuine" paper???) but my frustration is that the plotter measures the paper within a millimeter and won't print 36" wide if the paper isn't 36" or wider. Why does it need to be that precise? Is there a setting in the plotter to reduce the sensitivity of the measurement?

The precision is needed if you are printing scaled drawings. Is the algorithm used to inflexible for day to day use? Very possible.

I just measured the roll, and it is just a hair under 36" (35 15/16"). We bought HP paper; guess they aren't as high quality as we thought. Still, they should have a bit more leeway with paper width. Our title blocks are plotted 1:1 with allowances for margins, a 1/16" or 1 mm discrepancy in paper width should not cause such headaches. We can turn off the auto rotate, but then it will cause problems with someone plotting a 48" drawing. I just get frustrated when we have to use work arounds all the time and the trouble it causes when we forget (especially with a new user).
