I'm considering buying a used Z2100 for, basically, pennies from a salvage liquidator. The printer's been sitting for months with no cartridges but some printheads (that I know are probably trash). I have another Z2100 that I can borrow ink and heads from to test it, but only after I commit to the purchase and replace the carriage belt.
What should I be looking out for? I don't mind sinking maybe $1000 into it, but I'm trying to assess my risk of it becoming much more expensive.
Thanks!

Z2100 has 8 colors & print quality no as good as the 12 colors like Z3200 etc.
if you serious about the print quality, sped your money for the newer model.

Check & make sure it has formatter with HD, media spindle, printheads, inks, belt condition, metal stand , any ink marks
etc.
if you could power on it & see display panel & see can it boot to some points.
Price should no more than $300 for repair & parts, as less as possible,
if it is opened, missing covers, screws, parts, I would not recommend you to buy, someone might tried to
repair without success or messed up.
If you experience, ok... otherwise.... it is not that easy to fix. trust me..
PS : if you willing to spend $1000, this model not worth that bunch....

Last month, I bought a Z3200PS 44" for $350, but had to drive 11 hours round trip from Miami., fl to pick it up.
Freight quoted for $300, so I drove myself.
Hardisk was bad & had little cracking sound inside . Bought hardisk from HP part store without luck twice.
Then my hp friend from Japan sent me one hardisk free, even shipping. Such a good amigo. then replaced 3 printheads, inks & now it is working beautifully.
I am so delighted with my money & efforts spent.
