On the Deskjet 1050 J410 printer, can I use a black ink cartrige in the slot where a color cartrige would normally go ?

Hello, @rockydean - Hope you are well 🙂
Thanks for your continued participation on the HP Forums! I’d be glad to be of your assistance with your printer issue 🙂
I am afraid you cannot insert the black cartridge in the color cartridge slot and vice versa. The printer is designed in such a way to recognize the specific cartridge in the specific slot and if you change them that will result in a printer error and you will not be able to print.
NB: You can use the printer in a single cartridge mode. I.e. you can insert one cartridge in the printer (Of course in the correct slot ;)) and continue printing if needed.
I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!
Good luck 🙂

Hi @ Rocky,
Yes that's 100% correct, that printer design for one of color and one of black ink cartridge based and both of ink cartidge chip design aren't same. In the same time you can't easily inserted Black Ink Cartrige Instead Of Color Cartrige slot. Their required extra force and can't easily remove from carriage unit and becomes printer will damage.
Dvortex already told describe to you.
