I have a DesignJet T650 Large Format Printer. The menu screen is blue and displays the error message "B802C5E8." I’ve been unable to find any solutions through web searches. Has anyone encountered this error before, and if so, what was the cause?

Here’s what I’ve found so far:

  1. Print carriage obstruction – There’s nothing blocking it, and it moves freely.
  2. Print cartridge error – I’ve replaced the cartridges with new ones.
  3. Damaged encoder strip – I haven’t replaced it yet.
  4. Failed firmware storage device on the mainboard, mainboard needs to be replaced.
  5. Hardware issue or internal component failure. - Ok but which one?
  6. Malfunctioning printhead or communication error between internal components – I’ve replaced the printhead with genuine HP parts.
  7. Hard reset – I’ve unplugged the printer, held the power button for 30 seconds, plugged it back in, and powered it on (tried this 3 times with no success).
  8. Contacting HP Support – The printer is out of warranty.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

@wmcollinsjr,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since you've already tried the most common troubleshooting steps (reset, printhead replacement, checking for obstructions), here are a few additional things to try:

1. Firmware Recovery (If Accessible)

  • If the printer allows you to enter Service Mode, try updating or reinstalling the firmware.
  • Steps to enter Service Mode:
    1. Power off the printer.
    2. Press and hold the Power button and Cancel button together.
    3. Continue holding while turning the printer on.
    4. If it boots into a different menu, look for a firmware update or reset option.
  • If you can’t access any menus, you may need to reflash the firmware via a USB drive (requires HP Service Tools).

2. Check Formatter Board (Mainboard) & Internal Storage

  • This error sometimes points to corrupt firmware storage or a failing eMMC chip on the formatter.
  • If possible, check the board for burnt components or signs of damage.
  • Try reseating any cables inside the printer (disconnect and reconnect them).
  • If the board is damaged, it may need replacement.

3. Check the Encoder Strip

  • The encoder strip helps position the print carriage. If dirty or damaged, it could cause errors.
  • Cleaning: Use a lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the strip.

4. Perform a Hard Reset with NVRAM Clearing (If Possible)

  • Some DesignJets have a hidden reset sequence to clear non-volatile memory.
  • If accessible, try holding Power + Resume/Cancel for 30 seconds while turning it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
